I posted this in the transmission section but I neen some quick info. I am trying stop a tranny fluid leak on the drivers side of my turbo caravan. I allready replaced the axle seals on both sides. I got it back together and found it still leaked. Its comming from the same vacinity as the axle seal so I believe its leaking out around the metal cup that hold the seal in place. My question is.... If I take the bolts out of that metal cup what kind of surprises am I going to get. Does that cup hold anything in place inside the tranny. If I can get that cup off I will replace the gasket that seals it and the axle seal again. Any help or suggestions would be greeeaaat!!!!! Thanx in advance.

I've never taken apart a post '87 tranny, but I'm sure they're pretty much the same. That "cup" as you call it on the left side (that axle goes through) holds the ring gear/ bearings/shims in place. I don't think I'd chance taking it apart in car without pulling diff. cover to keep an eye on things inside. That's my opinion, but I'm not a tranny guy, so you might want to wait for more experienced replys.

Go ahead and take the cup off. The shims are held in place by the bearing race. Seal it back up with RTV and recheck for leaks. No worries.

I wish a had a fsm. Im just a little leary. I took it apart and took the 7 or 8 bolts loose and I cant knock the metal cup loose. jscott0624 said that there is nothing to fear, but 7 or 8 bolts has got to be holding something together in there. Ive got two other elcheapo manuals and they dont even show the axle seals. So has anyone pulled out that cup without any problems???

Ok guys, on further inspection I found that the leak is originating from the axle seal that I had replaced. Not from the metal against metal part on the seal but the rubber part of the seal. Talking to my neighbor who is pretty sharp on seals since he does a lot of work on industrial equipment. He said that the rubber part could have failed because of all of the metal that I sturred up flushing, replacing seals and such. It could have also been leaking because of a lip on the seal might have rolled over when I installed axle. The seals were Timken. The new one I bought today was a mexican brand from schucks. The new seal I got today seemed to be snugger on the axle, so maybe the Timken seal was defective. Anywho Ill give her a drive tommorrow and see what happens.

I don't recall, can someone refresh my memory. Does that seal have the circular spring on the inner side of rubber-lip? Could it have been dis-lodged by axle -shaft upon insertion? If so what kind of damage will loose spring falling inside diff area cause?
