Ok my first post. Im starting my turbo project on my 92, 2.5L turbo 1 Daytona. I took the head off the engine and seen that one of the pistons are slightly cracked around the outter ring when the valve indent is. I have a 91 2.5L n/a daytona also that i drove around a few years ago but im planning on making it a parts car. My question to you good people out there in internet land is can I exchange the cracked piston out of the 2.5 turbo for a piston out of the 2.5 N/A engine? are they made of the same material? I was looking at my options....
1. change out one piston
2. $500 for 4 new pistons (don't have that money for it right now)

I was also looking into a 2004 srt4 engine out of a PT GT for $500. it was in a wreck.

where can i go with this?

Money, time, fabrication skill, how much do you have each?

Money will come but im not gunna spend $50 000 to get this car on the road. Time; not planning on having the car on the road anytime soon. its gunna be a project car. just something to pick away at. My fab skills are minimal at best but I know people that can give me a hand.

What i am asking though, is are the pistons made out of the same material and are can they be interchanged between engines?

There are so many places you can go wrong. Like damaging the oil ring on installation, impoperly installing components and so on. First get started on the project then make your own decisions as to if it will work.

Wow, 2 of TD's grouchiest members replied to your 1st post... I feel for ya.
NA pistons won't work, they're made for higher compression and from different material. You can get a new set of stock turbo pistons for less than $500. Whatever you do, don't use hypereutectic pistons.

Go through the FS section on this board and you can find plenty of people that have 2.5l engines that still have good pistons out of them for sale or can be pulled. Find somebody that is parting a low milage engine that has good pistons and get the new rings and rod bearings and you should be in good shape till you go and rebuild the whole engine and you go through it totally and spend the money then.

Please read the following:

more here

I am a supporter of hypereutectic pistions in a boosted engine under ONE condition. That is, it must be tuned correctly and all parts must be properly installed/checked.
Most failures for hypereutectic pistons are: too close of a ring gap, poor tuning, and/or bad fuel.

sweet, thanks for the info. i have been doing a bit of reading up on the topic. is anyone still using cast pistons or is it smarter to get forged? id like to reach 300hp with my 2.5L turbo. I know knocking and detonation are bad things with turbos and im guessing thats what happend to my piston. I heard the guy that had the car b4 me was running high boost but i thought the lil' mitsu turbo would crap out b4 the pistons did.
Thanks again for the info!!

Here they have other piston choices too...

FWDPerformance.com

I would go forged if you are planning on making good power out of it and have the money. Cast can hold the power, but you have to have a good tune and never go lean/knock otherwise you are back here doing another rebuild.

So yes, cast can work...

cast or hyper will require fine tuning. If you plan to have a sloppy tune and go lean often, then forged is the only way to go for human error. You can run hypers and be on the rich side & they'll live for a long time. Just don't det./knock too much. Hypers can take the abuse, but not loads of it and not for very long. Cast pistons are at the bottom of the totem pole imo.
