Which timing?

Cam timing is all about lining up the dots with each other and the arrows with the cam cap seam.
Spark timing is all about setting it with the CTS unplugged

Ok, well NAJ has posted the pic a thousand times, but I'll do it in words:

Down below, you'll have the crank gear and the intermediate gear that drives the distributer and oil pump. Draw an imaginary line between the centers of the bolts (or use a ruler or string or whatever) and you'll see the crank gear has a dot and the I shaft gear has a little slash. line those up with each other. they will also be lined up with that imaginary line.
Up top, the cam gear will have a little hole and 2 arrows. the little hole will towards the top of the motor ( about 11 O'clock looking from the side) and the little arrows should be pointing right at the seam where the first cam cap meets the heads.

There is another way to do it, let me know if you want me to tell you the "lazy man's way"

This is for CHECKING cam timing. if it needs to be adjusted you'll still have to tear stuff apart.

The lazy man's way: (i've never seen this posted)
- Disconnect battery!
remove the #1 spark plug and put something in that is stiff, soft, and durable - like a plastic drinking straw.
Crank the engine by hand from the crank pulley with a long extension and breaker bar. (13mm I think) through that hole in the splash shield untile the plastic straw goes as high as its going to go. that should top dead center. go over to the bell housing to verify that the timing mark is right at 0. make adjustments until its at zero and proceed.
now pull the distributer. the slot in the oil pump shoul be oriented left to right PERFECTLY. when re-installing, make sure rotor is pointing toward #1.
now up top, pull that little plug out (maybe its gone already) of the plastic belt cover. Slide something like that soda straw in the hole and make sure the hole on the cover lines up perfectly with the hole in the cam gear.

if anything is not lined up perfectly like I just described above, its time to start taking pulleys off and looking for dots on gears.

EDIT: if when pulling distributer you notice rotor pointin to #4, engine might be at TDC on exhaust stroke... spin motor around by hand until you are TDC on compression stroke.

I think NAJ needs a bot to search the forum for the words 'cam timing' in new threads & post that FSM page automatically.....
