I bought an 85 glh-t and i'm trying to get it ready to become my daily driver becasue my lease on my current ride is almost up, but i'm having some real issues, that need addressed ASAP.

look for my other post as well if you are in a super helpful mood!.

ISSUE # 2: It has a slight miss at idle, and on top of that she puffs some white-ish smoke and i can smell oil. The compression is good, and i dont hear any tapping. It drives well, the miss seams to clear under load, and i'm not throwing a trail of smoke, as far as i can see, but it idles kind of rough and smokes...

I'm gonna have a leak down test done. It's been suggested to me that it might be valve seals, but the last thing i want to do it tear apart the motor and replace the valve seals to find it still smokes and misses. What is it??

Ask me questions if more info is needed, and i'll answer to the best of my abilities

I appreciate the help! thanks
-Chris

We dont have much to go on as far as the the idle miss goes it could be a broken vac line, incorrect fuel pressure, bad plugs/ignition system, bad tps sensor, bad egr......
The smoke is either bad turbo seals, worn out oil rings, worn valve guides/seals

If you are seeing white smoke you may also have a headgasket problem.
You would expect to smell coolant(sweet smell).

I dont think it's an HG, as it smells like oil instead of coolant.

-i just replaced the plugs and wires.
-i'll check the vacuum lines ASAP
- not sure i know how to find out if it's a bad tps or egr.. i cant even say i know what those are or how to check if they are bad..
-will a leak down test give me a better idea of whether it's the rings, seals, or turbo?

thanks for the help so far! it's much appreciated.

A leakdown test will certainly help to narrow down the problem unless it is valve seals or only the oil rings.

i agree with naj, white smoke is most often caused by coolant consumption...oil smoke is usually blueish and fuel smoke is usually black / grey, depending on how rich the mixture. any signs of coolant loss? most shops can perform a test on the cooling system for combustion gasses (indicating a head gasket / head/ or worst case block failure).

If he is getting a leakdown test done and there is a headgasket problem the air will be noticable in the radiator so I guess we wait for the test results.
