All,

I'm having a strange stalling problem on my GLHS. My engine started stalling out about 30% of the time when I bring my car to a stop. Starting the car after stalling can be difficult maybe 10% of the time. The engine will also sometimes stall momentarily when I am accelerating in second gear. I have not been able to duplicate the stalling condition when looking under the hood. Has anybody experienced anything similar? I'd appreciate anybody's insight on this problem. Thanks for your help.

Start with basics.
Be sure the throttle plate, AIS bore and pintle are clean of carbon, check base idle and reset AIS.
Check all vacuum lines for tight fit/cracks.
Any fault codes set?

+1 on the vacuum leak. mine did the same thing, it was the rubber elbow that the pcv valve plugs into. coming of the valve cover. lots of heat dried it then it split. fixed that now it purrs at 900rpm even. everytime i had trouble with idleing it was a vacuum leak.

I appreciate all the input so far. This has given me some places to start. I'm not sure wifey is going to give me some wrench time this weekend, but I'll look around under the hood if I can. I hate to say it, but I know very little about fuel injection and the components. Most all my previous cars have been carbureted cars from the 60's, so even an '87 GLHS is a huge step up in technology for me to learn. I jumped on deals I found for some rare 80's cars over the past year +, so I'm still a little lost under these hoods.

Definitely, I will look for a vacuum leak. The car has had a slightly fluctuating idle since it was smogged to bring it into California. The mechanic did a few things under the hood with the vacuum lines to get it to pass inspection, but he did admit that he was not fully sure of the vacuum line routing.

Wow I have the EXACT same problem with my 86 Shelby Charger. Just bought the thing tonight. It was hell getting off the interstate and all those stop lights. Everytime my car stalled and died.

People tell me its the Speed Distance Sensor...
That will be the first place to look early tomorrow morning.

Keep the help going!

Congrats on your purchase. Keep me posted on your progress with your problem. I wrenched on another car last weekend, so wifey is not likely to give me time this weekend.

And yes, it is Hell not knowing when you are going to stall out. This problem started for me when I was on the other side of the Bay. Luck would have it that there were two stalls on the SF-Oakland Bay Bridge. So it was bumper to bumper all the way across the bridge.

VSS will create a stalling on decel but not driveway dieout with vehicle not moving.
Check for fault code 15.

Hey man I figured out the problem. The guy who owned it before me, literally used it as a daily driver, no problems at all. So why would it all of the sudden stall and die out on me ten time when I bought it and drove it home? I spent hours trying to figure out the problem on the interweb. I tapped the gas tank, it sounded empty. I put 5 gallons in it, it started right up. Soon to find out, something so simple can be easily looked over.
Good luck with your car man!
