Here's my question: How in the **ck do you get the air out of the coolant system, without closing everything up too early trapping air and WITHOUT causing coolant to bubble all over the place!!!???

I have tried every way i can imagine now and it either still has air trapped, or more unfortunate, i end up with coolant boiling all over the place and a gigantic fissure erupting out of my radiator!!! I have a plug on my head i can get to, i have a Stock 195* thermostat, with a 1/16" hole drilled in it. I have the heater core running constantly (no bypass for A/C).

I have taken out the head plug, filled with coolant. Started car with radiator cap off and waited until the coolant level goes down. Then filled it up. Just a few minutes ago i attempted to wait until the fan turned on to close radiator cap, So i waited, and waited, and waited. Watching happily as the bubbles came out of my radiator. Then i watched the coolant over flow, and the thermostat open and stop the coolant from over flowing. Then i watched it turn into the "pop" stage when you watch all these little tiny bubbles come fizzing out like pop. Then it went downhill from there. . . .

It started to overflow from the radiator, so i figured, well, i can tell that it's gone into closed loop since the coolant in moving constantly, but the fan hasn't turned on, so i better wait for the fan. So the coolant continued to fizz as i stood there and waited and watched it start to overflow, then really start to overflow, hmm, still no fan, well, i had better put the cap back on before all my coolant runs out! So i figured, well, i probably should turn the car off. BIG MISTAKE. . . Coolant geyser from here to North Dakota!!! lol, so i figured, oh $hit, i probably ought to turn the car back on and get some water in the system so i don't get to listen as the head cracks as it air cools. And then i put the cap on and came in here to type all this mess that so far has either left people saying, oh, yeah, the headgasket is toast, well, no the headgasket is fine. . . It's just air in the system, that's why my heater blows hot air, than cold air, than hot air again, and vice versa. So that gets me to my point for those of you whom are still reading this, how do i PROPERLY bleed the coolant system of air, without a huge geyser and yet still ridding myself of air!!???

Thanks so much for anyone that responds!

blah blah blah, lol :big grin:

I believe the proper way of bleeding the cooling system is to remove the plug in the head & have the cap on & engine running.

yea thats the right way to do it.... but i did what you attempted to do... just started the car up with no cap and let it idle for a while until the thermostat opened then closed it off. worked fine for me.
