I have a 86 glh turbo omni (5 speed) and would like to have it capable of running 13's in the 1/4. from what i am seeing/reading this isnt going to be too tough. i will drive the car on the street 95% of the time only heading to the track to see how improvements worked. currently the car is all stock. im reading mod pages from everywhere (especially thedodgegarage.com as suggested) but im wondering what would you do in my situation to achieve this? money is of importance too, so keep that in mind.
thanks for any input

First, you want to invest in your gauges. Buy some gauges.

A/F
Boost
EGT if you're rich

Then.. invest in the grainger valve. Then intercooler. From there on, it's your choice.

Throw down the money for the gauges.
Throw down the money for a larger Intercooler and the later style intake if you have it. The biggest thing is the intercooler it is very important if you want to run 13's and be reliable.

The perform some weight savings of things you dont use or need. Like replacing the 40pound spare with a 3pound bottle of fix a flat.
Weight savings are the cheapest way to go faster.

I have around 600 dollars into my engine. I run somewhere around a high 13. I achieved this mostly through experementing with diffrent ideas.
How much of a mechanic are you?
PLay with your timing. Weight distribution fuel pressure boost pressure and so on.

i have both an A/F and Boost guage. not sure if ill be getting egt but probably will. intercooler is on my list too. i have 4 of them i just need to figure out which to use, and then get it all plumbed in. boost controller and g-valve are on the list of ordering too. was thinking of a header/ported exhuast but not sure which is best. any thoughts?

just port the stock manifold it'll be good for well past the 13's. a swap to the later style blow through intake will make IC'ing much easier.

EGT if you're rich...but he needs the EGT to find that out!

not going to use slicks fo the time being as im interested in how it does while on the street. but that is a good point. what is a good hooking street tire? i mean real street tire too not one that has to be used on dry conditions only.
thanks

Best of luck... especially with an "L" body.

id do a complete tune up.

cap/rotor/wires
set base timing. Check fuel pressure, make sure everythings good.
Compression check.
Get 2 guages, Boost and EGT.

Dont bother wiht an AF unless its a cyberdyne or similar type. Autometers are too difficult to read on the fly. EGT will be much more usefull. (tuning, and for every day use, you can look at it and youll know if your engine is leaning out or is running to rich)

If all is good a nice intercooler will be a must down the road.
Also get a Walbro 255 and change out the fuel filter. If you dont your fuel system will run out of breath down the road, and you WILL melt pistons.

Graingers are awesome for starters, later on you can get a cal. I dont know much about the electronics in an 86 tho sorry.

I have an autometer, and it is actually not hard to read at all, if anything, it is slightly annoying when not at full throttle tho... with the different collored lights going back and fourth... but I rigged a switch to it, so I can turn it on whenever I feel like looking at all the pretty lights.

Check out the pod in the GLHS, I just installed it and the ELGLOW Speedhut boost gauge looks bada$$ against the fireworks of the autometer. WhenI floor it, the gauge is very consistent and easy to tell what my ratio is.
