need help with spedometer 91 spirit r/t

I am having a problem with my 91-spirit r/t speedometer. It intermittently works and then does not work. Specifically, it will only turn on after it is completely warmed up and I run the car hard a few times. Then there are the rare occasions when it will work right from a cold start. Does anyone know a possible cause? Does anyone know if they are electronically controlled or cable controlled? Which tire does the cable or sensor run off of? This is a real pain in the rear and I really need help!

Your speedometer is electronic and get it's signal from the vehicle speed sensor located on the passenger side axle housing of the transaxle. These sensors are known to fail so I would start there, but there is a chance it might be a bad gauge too.
