Re: Heat shield

The OEM heat shield is no longer available. Sometimes you can find a useable one in the salvage yard on a cream puff. Else, you have to buy a starter heat shield/wrap at your choice of auto parts speed retailer such as summit racing.

Try this link for a list of available selections:

Re: Heat shield

I find the stock heat sheild causes more problem than good and would recommend a heat wrap. Often for local in my area, the new starter comes with the heat shield.

If you haven't purchased yet, see if you can find one that does, but not sure on your situation on parts in France Louis

I don't have a picture but it has a single screw hole that bolts to one of the solinoid screws, and formed to cover the entire top of the solinoid and starter motor, as well as two rubber bumpers that rest against the starter motor.

Re: Heat shield

I put one on my '89 like this...

Started having issues so I got a new one, when we went to do the swap we found that the foil had flaked off and crumbled away basically just leaving the blanket. Also found the starter solenoid had been burned on one side.

I looked up a new OEM heat shield and ordered it from Chrysler, the new one seems to be different than the way I remember the original (what was left of it). Haven't installed the new one yet but plan to soon. And it was still available, and wasn't expensive at all.

There is the possibility that wrapping the starter actually keeps the heat in, when in fact what you want is a shield that just fits between the what source and the starter and leaves the rest exposed to open air for cooling - remember that the starter is going to soak up heat just from being in contact with the engine.

If you don't like the Chrysler one, admittedly it looks pretty flimsy, I'd recommend a shield like this as opposed to a wrap. Just sort of bend this one in place and secure it with some metal zip ties. On the positive side these should be available to you locally in Europe.

Re: Heat shield

The OEM factory heat shield is the way to go. I didn't think they were available any longer. Last time I checked they were NS1 but obviously they made another run. Get them while you can I guess!

Re: Heat shield

I was not able to find any sources online for the clip. Not hard to find in the salvage yard however if you find a car that has the (rotted)shield still in place. You might give "The Car Farm" a call first though. Johnny probably has them NOS or good used.

Re: Heat shield

As of today, only 5 heat shields left in the entire country so if anyone needs any, I would get them ASAP.
