I installed a new camshaft, rocker arms, timing belt and tensioner in my 87 Daytona Shelbyz. I now have a whining noise that is coming from the inside of the timing cover. Twice, I used the timing belt adjustment tool to set the proper tension on the timing belt. The first time the belt was noisy at 1000rpm to 1200rpm. Now, after adjusting the belt the second time the belt is noisy only at idle when at operating temperature, and not noisy when cold. I can also can bend the timing belt with my fingers 90 degrees between the camshat sprocket and the intermediate shaft sprocket. I feel that the timing belt tension is correct. Could my cam, crank, intermediate sprockets be worn? Should I try to adjust the tension on the belt again?

Thank you

I've never used the proper tensioning tool. I like to be able to twist the timing belt about 90* (maybe slightly more). You could try backing it off a touch... a timing belt too tight may tend to whine a bit. Other than that, hopefully someone else has some input!

The whine is from the timing belt being to tight. It whines after getting warm/hot because the block and head expand and grow taller, causing the belt to get tighter.

What "JDIZZ" say's makes sense. The belt must be just a little too tight. I don't know why I am adjusting the belt too tight with the proper adjustment tool? I won't have time to work on the car until Sunday afternoon. Thank you for your help.

Check the idler pulley bearings. Of course you are describing a noise by typing it to us. We don't even get the benefit of the "Meineke - 'It sounds like thbbbff pft pft wheezzzze'". Occasionally these go bad.
