way to tell good a/c compressor?

Guys:

It's 90 degrees in Alabama today: got to get the a/c going. Is there any way to tell if a compressor is good when it's out of the car?

no. needs to be plugged into the car and installed.

that way you can listen if the clutch kicks in or not with the car running.

You can't positively tell but there are ways to figure out if it might be good. You can hot wire the clutch and see if it comes on. You can look at the front to see if there is build up of dirt that would stick to oil leaking out the front. you can turn the clutch by hand with a finger in each of the holes and see if one tries to suck on your finger while the other is tring to push it off. A little refrigeration oil in the suction hole and turning it would help check the last one.
