Well that is one option. That's basically what I did because I had all the parts laying around. Is the '86 Omni you have carbed? If so, you are probably best off just finding a Shelby Charger or Omni GLH Turbo underhood harness, converting it to '87 TII, and then getting a new cal to work with the 2.5L.
Although if you are good at splicing and can figure out wiring diagrams, you could convert the car to SMEC, and use the Spirit's underhood harness and SMEC. The harness will have to be modified to work with the '86 Omni though, mostly the bulkhead connector and other minor things like headlight connectors, mounting relays and solenoids in non-stock places etc...I got an '89 TI Caravan harness under the hood of my '86 Omni GLH and most would probably think it's the stock harness.
