just built a new motor for my 88 turbo shadow. its gonna be in the car today or tomorrow and idk what to do as far as first start up. i've heard some people say crank it over without plug wires to pump oil to the turbo then run it for 10 mins and change the oil.. etc. can anyone fill me in on an actual list of things to do for this? i've never built a new motor and i never had a turbo motor so this is all new to me right now

Easiest way to prime is without the timing belt on. Just crank the intermediate shaft with a drill. You will feel the resistance. Some leave the drain back hose loose till the oil starts coming out.
Hopefully you had the block and pan and rods and crank cleaned to get rid of crud in oil passages?

DO NOT Break In the Engine with Synthetic Oil,The Rings will not Seat Properly, after about 1000 miles if you choose to you can change to Synthetic.

cool that helps a lot thanks.. but i already have the timing belt on its all ready to go in the car.. will cranking it with the plug wires off be just as good? and as far as oil changes someone said run it for like 10 mins dont rev it, and change the oil then change the oil at like 50 miles and again at 150 or somethign like that.. does this sound right? should i be changing the oil like that?

First fill the Oil Filter before installing, that will get you Pressure Right Away.
When I bought my car New in 89 there was a problem, turned out to be a Gauge in #1 Cylinder Wall,Dealer had to put in a T-4 Short Block.I ran the Car normally for 1000 Miles then changed the Oil and switched over to Synthetic.
17 Years and 116.000 Miles later still going strong, she has been a Daily Driver for the last 5 Years.

just drive it normally. except for the first run go out and accelerate then let it engine brake back down a few times, that helps seat the rings.

When you first start it up take it out and drive it normally to 30mph then accelerate to 60 let off the gas til it is back at 30 then accelerate to 60 again do this for about 10-15 minutes and you should have the rings settled into place. Have a fire extingisher with you just incase. You should be fine to unplug the plug wires. do put oil in the filter. After getting the rings broke in look everything over for leaks, etc. check your oil to see if anything is in it that shouldn't be. At about 75 miles take a look at your spark plugs, if they are nice clean and brown your good. then drive her normally letting her breathe now and then for the first 1000-1200 miles then have fun!

It's been awhile sense ive broken in a engine so if I forgot anything or possibly said something in the wrong way, someone correct me thanks.

I'd also pull the two plug ins on the HEP sensor. That way if you're cranking the engine over with the starter you won't be sending fuel into your engine and getting gas in the oil. I'd also suggest you fill the oil filter with oil and also crank the engine with out plugs and with the HEP disconnected until the oil light goes off in the car. Then fire it up and let it run 10 minutes then change oil and filter. There's a couple schools of throught on breaking in a motor and one school is to ride the motor hard for the first 20 miles to seat the rings properly. The other is to take it easy. I'm not an expert in this so I can't comment. I broke mine in on the easy side and everything seems to be okay.
