but just having bolts screwed in what good would that do, they would need to be bolts with loops or something on the end

Thread the bolt through the chain link the head will keep it from going through the link-may need a couple of washers too depending on bolt. If you got the rental route they may include bolt-on eyes or brackets.

Yeah, those things are RARE! I had to travel to Tibet so the Dali Lama could send me on a quest for inner peace - during my quest I met a little boy with an engine lift plate! I traded him a bag of magic beans.

Apparently that little boy grew up and opened a lift-plate factory.

I think they will have a chain with some plates at then ends to bolt to the block.
But without having a really good place to bolt to, that doesnt help. and if you are gonna spend the cash on a chunk of chain, you could just use bolts with washers as suggested before. Thats why I used the lift-plate... it was easy. the hardest thing is to find some 11mm bolts.

I'm seriously liking the whole "buy a used cherry picker" Idea.

look on craigslist... or your local newspaper... do you have Tradin Times in your area? Hell, Maybe you got a big, strong healthy tree, hang a pulley up there, throw a rope over and hitch it to a mule

seriously, These blocks are not that heavy - but if you try and haul it out by hand you'll blow your spine apart from leaning over the front / side of the car.

Do your back a favor and figure out a way to do it without killing yourself.

haha i think im going to go with the tree and mule approach kidding but im renting a cherry picker tomorrow and am going to use the head bolts on the block and put washers on to secure them in place. All i have left to do is remove the bellhousing bolts and the engine mount bolts and she will lift right out! Thanks everyone for all the information

Then, all ya gotta do is store it!!! MY 2 car garage barely fits my 2 cars, so my cherry picker ended up at work. The damn thing takes up, like, 4 sq. ft of valuable space. Seriously though, having your own hoist is invaluable. Mine has lifted hundreds of engines and many more items that my back really didn't want to huff!

Great thread; just what I needed to assure me that I am not completely crazy in thinking that I might do this with my '84 Plymouth 2.2L block that is without head and manifolds presently.

These ideas and pictures gave me some courage. Thanks.
