hey everyone i recently stripped two of the bolts that hold the crank pulley in place, the other ones are already removed and im trying to get to the cap that goes over the main bearing cap bolts, any advice on removing these stripped bolts would be great

fyi i tried using an 8mm stripped bolt remover (grips into the bolt as you try to loosen it) and it didnt work and now spins freely as well

unclear on ur desc? u rounded the head of the bolt or did u strip the threads? cuz when the threads are gone, that a stripped bolt, when the socket or wrench cant grab the bolt then the head is rounded and not stripped? so whatcha got?

you will have to dremel / grind off the head of the offending bolt(s)

then after you remove the pulley, hopefully there is enough stub sticking out to get a vice-grip on

IIRC, the 2.2 uses a reverse torx type bolt head. I don't have a 2.2 here to look at, but if that is the case, you are using the wrong type socket. Look at your other bolts to see what the head looks like. Torx head has 6 points, where as a regular bolt has 6 flat sides, like a 6 sided stop sign. Get the right tool and most likely you will be able to remove the 2 bolts. If not, I have had some success with using a cutoff tool, to cut a slot in the bolt head for a flat blade screwdriver. Before cutting the slot, beat the bolt head a few times with a drift and a BFH (Big F'in Hammer) to loosen it.

Ah... thats the easy way.
Wanna know the hard way? leave just the bad bolt in over winter. The freeze/thaw cycles of the water that gets behind the pulley will snap them of after a while..lol

Shoots that crank pulley 2 blocks down the street at the top of first...lol

For future reference my personal favorite is welding another bolt on the rounded head if you have access to a mig welder. The tricky part is making a good weld but I've removed those same bolts by welding.

It's a little easier to tap a 5/16" I.D. nut onto the head of the offending bolt, and weld the inside of the nut to the bolt head. The heat from welding, and a socket on the nut makes the bolt come out easy as pie.

Also excellent for broken studs.
