Oil pressure drops to "L" on acceleration on my 86S.

If I coast in 5th or feather the pedal, I can get pressure to come up to the first has mark off the "L."

Same thing when I'm idling (pressure rises to first hash mark off LOW).

Oil pressure light isn't on. Just changed oil and used the NAPA Gold (WIX) filter corresponding to the stock filter number.

Oil reads full on the stick and is clean.

Bad oil pump? Sending unit?

My manuals haven't arrived. If it's the oil pump or sending unit, can anyone save me some time and tell me where it is and the best way to change it?

Any suggestions on a good pump? Should I pursue an oil cooler while I'm at it?

Finally, I'll have to verify if my stock oil gauge reading is accurate. I'm not a good electrician so I'm thinking I'll need a mechanical oil pressure gauge.

Any thoughts on where to get one and can anyone tell me how to hook it up?

Thanks!

Could just be a loose connector on the sending unit.

Do you know where it is? I'm still learning where everything is on the engine. My manuals haven't arrived yet.

Connect a mechanical gauge to the oil distribution block. The distribution block is located on the radiator side of the engine ... to the right of the spark plug distributor. To further identify the oil dist. block, trace the oil supply line (1/4" tubing) from the turbo.

At the front of the dist. block is a threaded plug. Attach the mechanical gauge to that port.

The (2) wire connector you see on the top of the dist. block is the oil sending unit. That's what you're reading in the instrument panel now.

Thanks! Do you know where I can get a good mechanical gauge?

Also...can you tell me where the sending unit is? I'd like to check connections first.

For the time being, I think there's still a few around but if we don't start selling cars around here, that could change.

Thanks for the help. I need my manuals!!!!

The round metal thing bolted to the oil distribution block, right next to the oil feed line for the turbo. Look and you'll find it.

Thanks again guys. Found sending unit loose. Tightened it down, reconnected and pressure now reads perfect.

The motor city is not what it use to be. More like Unemployed City. Part stores around here will have the testers and parts that you need to fix the common problems for your particular car. Now if you want to rebuild you engine, do your own exhaust, and/or rebuild your own trans GOOD LUCK finding those parts locally. If you want to do custom work such as internal trans/engine work, sorry not going to happen.
Body work on the other hand, you can get that done anywhere, but it still isn't affordable like you'd expect it to be. I could take a car to get painted professionally cheaper in another state than I could have it done here.

You are the first in over 10 years of using that screen name to correctly identify the source.

Where are you located? There was a Mancini's/ Detroit Performance on Kelly near 14 mile in Fraser- carrys and knows Mopar stuff. Also a machine shop at Garfield & Utica that did some work on a few engines' for me a few years ago.
