you would be better off rebuilding, shipping would be some big $$$, and you are not going to find a "new" motor

Though the number of T1 cars in the junkyard seems to have peaked around here, a few still show up. I saw three in a big junkyard last week. Two had mileages around 120K (not fresh but rebuildable). Another idea would be to watch Craigslist for a whole car with a good motor. Pull the motor and junk the rest.

Right, key word is "rebuildable." If he doesnt have block damage than he would be better off rebuilding his then buying another motor to rebuild.

well my tona has roughly 100k. odometer went out at 88k. i thought about rebuilding mine but the engine looks pretty trashed and really worn. have any of you had any run ins with remanufactured engines? if so how decent are they really. ive played with v8's alot but never 4 bangers.

They do not do reman engines anymorefor these cars. Depending on how much you are willing to spend, you can by one from FWD Performance or turbosunleashed

The engine BAY probably looks trashed, when my engine bay gets dirty, it looks like some piece of crap, but once in a while, I wash down the engine bay and I get a little bit of oil and I smear it over everything (hoses, vc, vacuum lines, etc) and the engine bay looks as it did from the factory. You can't visually tell if an engine is worn or not by looking at it from the outside.

And the dying might just be fuel delivery problems and vacuum problems. You can't just get a "new engine" and fix everything. The previous owner of my 1990 Daytona swapped out the old 188K mile engine with a 100K mile engine. Once the engine is warmed up, it runs like a beast, but it still runs a little funny, but when cold, the engine dies at random intervals.

Get a compression test done on the engine you have, and if its decent, just devote some time into checking over your vacuum lines, preferably getting all new lines, put "fuel system cleaner" in your tank a couple times, it helped me out a LOT. And go from there.

...also, you would be amazed how much quieter an engine becomes after you replace the worn timing belt tensioner, replace / properly re-tension the 20 year old timing belt, get new alternator bearings, make sure the water pump is smooth, grease the bearings in the idler pulleys, etc.

You can forget about finding a good engine for these things, or at least I would. If you find one that is still running, someone has been in there before you and more than likely hacked something together that isn't going to hold up long.

If you find a reman, forget it, as they suck, too.
