So ive been looking and looking and looking for a TD everywhere in Texas and they are either stripped down for racing or they're so far gone that its not even worth the gas or time to go get it.

So here's my dilemma...I haven't found any complete TD's here but I have found some wrecked ones with some decent looking engines and transmissions in them.
So, I've got a 1979 Omni with the original 1.7L VW engine pushing out a max of about 65HP with the 3-speed automatic and I'm wondering if it's possible to do a swap for one of the wrecked TD engines.

Here are some Questions that I would like answered...
-Which engines are prefered for a swap?
-Are the motor mounts different from the '79s mounts and do they have to be changed?
-Which transmission would be best for it?
-Do any of the axles need to be changed?
-Should I leave it an automatic or is it more trouble than what it's worth?

Don't be afraid to be as thorough as possible

the most common is a turbo 2
engine from a GLHS omni or charger.
you can also find them in shelby csx's.
intercooled is the way too go.

as for transmission,
an A555 is strong.
but the easiest would be an A525.
both are 5 speeds. =) works much better.
you can find the A525 from an omni GLH or 86 turbo daytona.

you can basically find everything i posted in a junkyard.

automatics are good if you have a good stall.
i also heard of someone welding some plate on a stock auto, and it holding upp too 500hp.
not really sure though.

P.S.
you would also have too have your ecu tuned too the motor and specs of the engine your running.
