Well as the title says, I got a head gasket to replace.

Does anyone have tips on removing the head while it's still in the car?

thanks for the link but I was looking for more of just tips on how to get this damn intake manifold off the head, like how to get at the bolts over the turbo that hold the intake manifold on the head.

You leave everything on the head including the turbo. Messing with the manifolds in-car is a total waste of time since it is not needed to change the head gasket. Get a friend to help lift the assembly unless you are big and hairy.

So basically drain coolant, remove the timing gear off the cam and zip tie the belt to the cog, remove valve cover, remove headbolts, remove turbo oil feed from front of engine, remove ac compressor(leave lines attached and swing to the side) remove the bolts on the ac bracket that go to the head(3 I think), get under car and remove turbo oil return hose/support bracket/downpipe bolts, remove turbo coolant line at block. remove fuel injector lines, vacuum lines, throttle cable/cruise.

My personal best is 45 minutes to strip down with air tools and bolts/tools flying everywhere. Probably 2-3 hours to put it back together carefully.

"remove turbo oil feed from front of engine"
where is this I didn't see it?

"remove ac compressor(leave lines attached and swing to the side) remove the bolts on the ac bracket that go to the head(3 I think)"

is there something else when it does not have ac?

thanks for all the info.

the oil feed is between the distributor and trans on the front of the engine (if you have a turbo engine).

if you dont' have ac you have nothing to worry about regarding lines and compressor. if you have ac, you have to move the pump to get at 2 bolts behind it that connect the head to the block thru the a.c bracket.

just start yanking and when stuff gets hung up, remove that part. that's how i did my first one

yea well I can't move it yet at all, is there a safe way to get the head off the bock once everything is removed, if it is just stuck together.

got the head off, now it's just clean it up and put it back together!

it was definitely the head gasket, it was blown out between cyl 1 and 2.

so what I have been told is to get Part Number :P4452005

I picked up a felpro headgasket and will be returning that to use the mopar one.

Is this the right part for my 88 2.2 turbo 1?

Do I need different head bolts?

i just pulled my head with the manifolds attached. I'd probably just pull the head with the turbo. It'll likely be easier. I wouldn't know though. I left my turbo in while i pulled the head.

And yes you'll need new head bolts. You can reuse the washers though.

That sounds like the right gasket. It's for the non cross drilled motors up to the year 1988, for tbi, and turbo 1. So you should be fine with it.

Yeah i somehow got the head out without removing the turbo. Believe me, I know I did it wrong; that its alot easier just to unbolt the turbo from the down pipe, but the bolts to the exhaust from the turbo had to be cut, and i couldn't reach them without getting the head out. Looking back on it i have no idea how the hell I got that head off.

I didn't remove anything (ie turbo or exhaust) when I changed the head gasket.
