Hey, I've gotta '87 carb'd 2.2 Horizon which makes the exact same noise. It has low miles, only around 64,000 and it's been city driven all its life. I always thought it was a noisy lifter or rocker arm on the number 1 or 2 cylinder.

My mechanic even checked it over and said something of the same sort, and quite simply, not to worry about it. It's been doing it all its life and I dont think it would cause any catastrophic failure on mine or on yours.

However if anyone else knows the cause, I'm all ears.

Many Thanks.

I'm confused with what you wrote, are you sayin it's a noisy lifter or rocker arm? but not to worry about??? did you click the link on the bottom of my first post to read about the pulley noise??? thanks again for replying to my post

Is rod knock really that common on a TBI car? And doesn't piston slap usually only happen when you put new pistons in the engine that have too big of a clearance?

My IROC R/T made the exact same noise as well. I freaked out! But I just took my time, scoped around the engine bay, and pin pointed the noise. Mine was coming from the water pump. The fins were all there, but the bearing was completely shot. I replaced that with a remaned mopar unit and noise is gone.

Stick your head (I'm not kidding) inside your engine bay in several different areas, move your head around in each, and get under the car as well. You will find the source of the noise. Then you'll know more or less what's causing it.

Ah yes, my mistake, I forgot about that. In attempt to fix the issue, I've had the alternator and the water pump replaced. Engine still makes the knocking noise. Checked the other pulleys, they were free of defects. And it sounds to me, like it's coming from the rocker arm or lifter, my own non-professional opinion. Also just to add about the bearing knock; my car never came with A/C.

Take that part with a grain of salt. (I haven't the time nor money to dive deeper into it, but its always been like this for the 5 years I've owned my Horizon and the previous owner, my grandfather, had the same issue as long as I can remember.)

Blue colored smoke means you're burning oil. If you've been burning oil for a long time, you might be really low on oil and that's why you're lifters are making noise. My R/T's lifters started making noise like crazy when I realized that I was empty on oil. It burned ALL of the oil within a month...

Check your oil level, do an oil change and see if the noise goes away.

I could be rod knock, piston slap, bad piston wrist pins or maybe exhaust leak

I do check the oil everyday..it's in the good range WHEN I first heard the noise that is what I thought was wrong...low on oil..but that isn't the problem..I used stop smokewith leak stopper last week an then bought Gunk valvemedic around last friday...neither helped the engine much..still that loud noise... I don't think it makes the noise while I drive..only when I stop an idle or have it in park...

Looks like you're in for either a rebuild or getting a good used motor...

*le sigh* I pretty much knew to fix mine, I'd have to rebuild it. Sadly I haven't the funds to do so. And really, it's a 20 year old, carb'd, carbon-ed up engine. I'll prolly just do a turbo swap when it bites the dust, or maybe if i can find one, rebuild + supercharger.
