I have done 2 timing belts without the special tool and they have held up perfect.

Ya, t-belts on these cars are a cake walk. No special tooling required.

well the conversion is really pretty straightforward- mainly cuz it uses factory parts AND many many people have done it and documented the process

however - it is by no means simple. you need to have both good wrenching skills AND some basic electronics skills; also be persistent and have some patience too

however since it sounds like you have a nize 86 Z. there are plenty of mods that are easy to do (keeping the log intake) which will improve the performance and wont have to be un-done if later you choose to go TII - like a free flowing exhaust system, CAI, MBC, roller cam, underdrive pulleys, etc

Ya, been a career mechanic for 7 years now. With a few ASE's under me. Just seems like everyone I talk to say it isn't bad but to get them running right is a huge pain in the ass. I already have eliminated the catylist in mine that helped big time. I'm currently looking for a already stock TII car that maybe has been totaled in the rear or t-boned. Or it doesn't run or something like that. For only a few hundred dollars. I think It will make the swap much easier. Any one got one??? lol.

well I did the conversion on my (formerly carb'd) 86 omni

IF you do the swap right and dont F up any wiring - then its pretty much plug&play since you are using all stock parts including the calibration

most people who have had difficulty - including myself - had problems with MISTAKES which were made in the process, or installed used parts which turned out to be faulty, sometimes those can be a bit tricky to track down

example - PO had slid the rad over to make room for the IC; it was about 1/4 inch from the alternator; (once I got car running) when I did a hard launch the fusible link would blow; took me couple hours (OK - it took me about 4 hours) to find that the engine was torqueing and rocking the alternator field wire into the brass rad end tank

was that a problem with the TII conversion ? well, yes, but it was a MISTAKE made by the PO (I swear it wasn't me!)

^ lol.. Omni's have a much tighter engine bay anyways. But what a pain that would be.

I'm still going to do the swap. I'm just totally preparing myself so I can hopefully do all this in one weekend. I'm trying to gather all the info I possibly can. I really want to get it done in only a weekend though.
