I'm wondering if an in-car swap to TII is do-able. I know it's way easier with the head out, but last time I pulled the head off a parts car, I nicked the surface, so I can't imagine how you guys are getting a fully dressed head on without doing some kind of damage to it. Plus, wouldn't the head torque weird with all that weight on on side? I'm kinda scared to mess w/ the head gasket, knowing how offten these things blow.

Yes don't do it! I get a helper to get the head on/off.

its doable, but how easy it is mainly depends on when the exh mani was last out and whther PO had put antiseize on it

also how small your hands are, how patient you are, and how well stocked your tool selection is (e.g. a 10mm 'flex socket' is a beautiful thing)

anyhoo - its easy to pull the head - just have a friend handy when its time to lift up and drop back in

I TII'd my 86 omni so LMK if you need more info.. R U on TOML ? if not U should be...

I am on SDML, not sure what TOML is? Turbo Omni ML? I remember trying to get on a Team Omni thing, but they rejected me twice (I have no idea why, it's not like I have a bad rep or anything).

So it is possible, eh? I may try it over the winter if I get my TII turbo, have most everything else. Still need an IC and TII computer.

Does anyone try to support the heavy side while they are torquing the head bolts? Or just snug the front side bolts first? I should just go for the TIII and be done with it!

Two people is a must to get it back on without the possibility of damaging something. As for your question of all the weight tipping the head backwards during intall. I usually just put one bolt in on the front (not too tight, but tight enough to hold the head level). Then you can put in all the other bolts. As for removing the manifolds with the head on the car, it can be done, but chances are with a 20 year old car the bolts are rusty and it might take you twice as long then just pulling the head and working with it that way.

I would say 4 times as long, if nothing goes wrong. Murphy is going to pay you a visit for sure.

I would probably go like this, spend 5-6hrs cursing and swearing under the car then snap! oh- crap now I gotta pop the head off anyway...

I took the head off and put it back on all by myself. Just got to hug it and set it down right on the pins. It was a pain but all my friends bailed on me. Thankfully it was lighter with a SS header, and no top on the fully ported lower half of the 2 piece intake

I have done it by myself too, not recommended- you could nick the hg or worse throw your back out or drop a nut.

I just put mine back in by myself - and can I just comment on how friggin' hard this was on a mini! the engine sits real low in the bay so its a sh#it angle to lift from. ah well - thought I would share - get a buddy to help and you can finesse the whole assembly back on there... no worries

I remember when i had to lift the head and put it back in on my non turbo shadow. When i took it off i hopped right into the engine bay and lifted. When i put it back in i killed the HG, had to buy another one then got it in by myself.

The more I read and find out more info on doing a T1 stock setup to a "TII" set up just to add an intercooler. The more I just want to buy a car that is already a TII..... I'm starrting to gather up stuff to convert my 86 DaytonaZ hopefully before winter hits. I only have so far a 1 piece intake, matching fuel rail and injectors. Witch I just got back from the injector shop to have flow checked and cleaned up. Everyone I've talked to says that wiring in all this map sensor and TPS sensor is a joke! Especially since my map is inside the car. So with that being said.... Is it really worth it for me to do? I love this car and so does everybody that sees it. It's in very good condition aside from the paint. I just wish it was faster than a 17 sec 1/4.

If you pull the head you have the opportunity to do other performance enhancing mods. Like disassemble the head and pull the valves out, de-carbon the valves and polish them, do a little head porting, port the exhaust manifold, etc.

Besides, the timing belt needs changed.

I know, and it does need a new belt, but I don't have the tensioner tool, then I'll want to do other things, .... I kinda want this motor to blow so I can maybe go to a 2.5 CB done right.

i just changed my timing belt with to special tool. i just used a screwdriver (rather large one) between the backside of the tensioner pulley and i think the motor mount. (i think but i dont rember) anyways a big screwdriver works fine.
