Sport Compact Car had an issue in September of 2005 titled "Budget Bad-boys" It featured a CRX, A 1st gen DSM, and ofcorse my favorite, a Dodge Omni. The builder claimed to run 11.5's all day long for less than 4 grand and that included the price of car. All i remember was that he was using a 2.5 (for torque) and one really strange item... GM J-Body Axles that have "proven trouble free for dozens of passes." Does anyone know any more information about this set-up? Does anyone actually have that issue that could include the parts list? Is there anyone actually running GM axles in their L-body?

Very sick. It does say GM J-body axles right? I'm currently in a bind with my project, and its looking like it will face hibernation before completion. 87 Omni with a T2/A-555 pulled from an 88 Shelby Daytona. And neither the omni nor the daytona axles fit correctly...

you are needing to get a hold of a set of 88-90 Automatic L-body axles. 87-88 was the transition period from the small spline to the large spline transmission shafts. So you need the 88+ axles from an omni. And the manual ones will not work since they were still small spline.

Yes it says that he used GM j-body axles but they were customized to use with the td tranny and hubs.

So, i assume i'm not the only SCC reader on the forum. Yeah, his omni was what swayed me from building a 350 Chevette and a Turbo Venture swap Cavalier. Kids in my town all rock JDM, I traded my Camaro for an 88 Yota Pickup and saved the rest of the money for my Omni project. Since september of '05 i have been scouring for information, parts, build ups and ofcorse, the base Chasis. Well, i didn't find mine until late '06 (When it was sitting behind the garage that i hired to spray a liner in my truck, days away from the crusher). Anyway, Thank you all for your constant help and support. The project is shaping up much better than i ever thought possible. Any additional information on Boyd's Omni is greatly appreciated, It may seem odd, but i am a big fan of the car.

If you want to keep the equal length axels make sure to get two drivers side axels from an 88-90 Omni automatic. This is the setup my brother has in his 84 Omni with a 555.

No it shouldn't take any modification, if you don't want to use the equal length axels you could just use the long passenger side axel from the 88-90 automatic Omni. There are other modificatons necessary for putting the 555 in an L-body though. You will either need to put the cable shifter in the L-body(which my brother did to his 84 Omni) or do what we did to mine(rod shifted with Heim joints).

Already planning on putting the cable shifter into her. Purchased a full 88 Daytona for this swap. Forgive me for sounding stupid, but, if i use two driverside axles, won't i be lacking an intermediate shaft?

If you use the two drivers side axels you will need to use the intermediate shaft out of the 88 Daytona if it had one or any vehicle that came with the larger sline intermediate shaft. Other wise just use the long passengers side axel from the 88-90 automatic Omni.
