well my post on 9-27-08 got some answers . had a stranger put on timing belt.anyway cam broke in half.new chrysler cam has 2 part # build date up to 3-88 calls for pn/4387850 and pn/4387721 after. i havent got my build date yet. does anybody know what the diff is? can i go aftermarket? is my engine an interferance fit? i was doing around 75mph when it broke. did i bend valves? i did'nt check my compression as i believed just belt broke. is there any way to check for valve issues with out putting new cam in? please excuse my inexperience never had any problem with car but for blown head gasket. any help is good help...

These engines are non-interference. As far as the cam its your choice you can go aftermarket of factory. If you go factory get an 88 TBI cam instead of a turbo cam. Just change the cam put on a new belt and tension the belt CORRECTLY! www.thedodgegarage.com can help you out with the basics and it has a lot of good information.

In '88 the turbo and the 2.2 TBI cam where the same .... as are all 2.2 TBI cams.
In '88 and '89 only the 2.5 TBI cam were retarded 4*, otherwise they are the same spec. After those two years, all TBI cams are the same.

dp88 - some nice things about the 2.2/2.5 turbo engine w.r.t. cams:

1. relative insensitivity to cam choice (like most mild turbo motors)

2. only two "families" of OE cam grinds - turbo and NA (incl. carb & TBI), with modest differences in cam lift & event timing between the 2

3. only one change in camshaft "style" from '81-95: in '88 the cam followers were changed from sliders to rollers; the cams are different: a roller cam cant be used with sliders and vice versa BUT the cam AND followers can be swapped (some exception -later motors didnt have oil feed adequate for slider - see DDG) ; also in '88 the cam belt and pulleys were changed from a square tooth profile to a round tooth profile (less noise), these can also be swapped +/- '88

many of us (myself included) run TBI cams in our turbo motors; gives more power UP, loses some torque LOW

so to summarize- pretty much any 88-95 cam will work fine

A file put together by another person ... a very thorough job they did.

You'll need MS Excel or OpenOffice to view.

If you haven't checked for valve damage yet there is a way you can check before you buy a new cam. You can pull out all the spark plugs, remove the cam so all the valves are closed. Put the cylinder that you want to check at BDC and pressurize the cylinder with compressed air, you will need a special fitting that screws into the spark plug hole for this. Listen for air comming from the throttle body (open throttle to aid in hearing) and the exhaust (tail pipe). They are right though these engines are not intereference motors and probably wouldn't do any damage unless the rpm's were over 5k when the belt broke.
