Synthetic Oil

After 3000 miles on my rebuilt engine.. I just switched over to synthetic Oil.. Now I hear some people waiting 6,000 miles between oil changes...

I'm the type of person who always change my oil religiously every 3000 miles in all my Mopar vehicle with Valvoline oil.... and I have had a couple older 318 vehicles go 200,000 to 300,000 miles with out a problem got to love those Chrysler engineers

Now 6,000 miles seems like a long time between oil changes.. but my Brother was telling me Amsoil makes a Synthetic that they recommend 10,000 miles between oil changes..
I’m running Valvoline Syntech 10 W 30.. in my Daytona Shelby Z … How long do you guys wait between oil changes????

I usually go 3000 miles. I try not to go over but if I do I don't sweat it. There's plenty of life in the Mobil 1 at that mileage. I wouldn't recommend going 6k with any oil unless it's all highway; ie. 300+ miles a day. There are simply too many variables to make a statement that works for everyone, so play it safe and go 3k miles.

It's never the oil that's the problem. It's the dirt! Many miles of use no matter what the oil will contain higher amounts of dirt. Using Wal-mart oil or Amsoil. The dirt is the engine killer (or if your engine eats oil, than the lack of oil is a killer also :big grin: ) I change it every 3K in the Mini. Every 500-1000 miles in the Shadow (piece of mind).

BTW, if you don't have any oil leaks now with conventional oils, then you'll see them with synthetics.

Like White Lightning said, its the dirt. I've heard of people going 6000 miles but still changing the filter and topping off at 3000. I go 4000 miles with the lebaron on Mobil 1 Syn. and it still doesnt seem to lose much viscosity.

It has been a long time since I have read it, but I think Amsoil doesn't recommend extended oil changes on TURBO CHARGED motors without an oil analysis being performed. They have a web site, maybe check it out. I run Amsoil in all my vehicles, my TD's get changed between 3 and 4 thou. with a filter change.
On a new motor, I run the first 500 to 700 miles on dino juice then switch to synthetic oil.

Hey guys thanks for all the feed back...
Just like I suspected.. I will keep changing every 3K miles

In response to JDIZZ.. yeah this is actually 3500 miles after the rebuild..
After the rebuild I was running Valvoline 10-30 for the first 500 miles... changed the oil & filter... but my rings were not seated and it was smoking like a bitch.. so I stuck with the std oil.. the rings finally seated about another 300 miles... topped off the oil and ran it for the remaining miles...
And now I'm expermenting with Synthetic oil...

Once again thanks Guys for all the good info..

This is what I do in my cars too...Some cars are recommending 5k plus between these days, but I shoot for 3k...if it doesn't happen...well, i'll get it by 4k for sure...grin

As everyone already pointed out it is how dirty the oil is that should dictate the oil change intervals. A larger oil filter may help keep the oil cleaner longer.

I use a Trasko oil filter and my oil was clean after 5000Km but changed it anyway since they suggest to do it when the filter is first put on the car.

Beware during break in. I think that blowby past my rings caused the oil to lose viscosity and the rings scratched my walls...bad. Now I'm looking for another commonblock!
