or just run it to the heater core bypass valve, since I'm thinking of running that but just putting a rubber band around it in the summer to bypass the heater core all the time. It would technically still be going to the side port of the water pump.

im only going to the tstat housing because thats what everyone seemed to want, i can totally add the option of a few more feet of hose and a proper fitting to connect to a drilled and tapped hole in the water pump.

doesnt going to the stat housing have some value, since it creates a path "through the wall" at the end of the head to go to the radiator?

the nice thing about going to the tstat housing is that you dont have to drill and tap the water pump, which I would think would mean youd need to have the water pump off, which isnt exactly fun, at least last time I did it.

Well personally I'm not going to tap the housing. There are housings out there, very common ones, with 1-2 inlets besides the main one underneath. Mine just has one extra on the side, but If I run the water to the heater core out the side of the head instead of from underneath the t-stat, then from the heater core back to the second inlet on the water pump my flow past cyl 4 would be great.

would a T into the heater hose work ? - instead of taping the houseing - just thinkin it would be easier to hook up that way

POPE , is there a water cross over at the back of the small block intake ? - been so long I can't remember

I know I read somewhere that when running lines from the back corners of the intake they are better if they go to the opposite corners at the front
article said "the heads like to know each other" - they didn't explain but I figure it may help to ballance the temps from right to left - my guess anyway

I'm thinking of just plugging the big hole in the t-stat housing where the coolant flows to the heater core from, and just running it from the 4th cyl coolant adapter to the heater-core bypass valve instead.

I wonder if that will affect the heater operation - ie give less heat inside the car

Its possible. My car will never be driven in under 50* if I have any say in it, so the amount of heat isn't that big of a deal. I like to drive it in the fall so I still want heat hooked up to de-fog the window, but that doesn't take much.

once the motor is up to operating temps though it shouldn't matter because all the coolant will be about 180*

not from the engine. With a turbo car you can hit boost in the snow and get heat right away though, basically sucking the hot water from the turbo right into the heater lines. But the amount of heat off the engine is a hair higher out the side of the head

It is always best to use the bypass to flush water through the whole engine. The 2.2 flushes 3 cylinders out of 4 and the small block V8 flushes 2 cylinders out of 8. Coolant flows into the block, up a few inches and back to the stat where the bypass is. There is no cross over in the back on the intake on the SB LA. You drill and tap for a new line, the spot to get coolant is there in the heads. Then you run your heater line and the bypass off the back of the engine. Then the water pump uses the heater and the bypass to pull and fluch coolant off the back of the engine, pulling coolant along the HG's to the back.

thats the way i was told to do the #4 cooling mod is to just run it from the side of the head to the heater core

welp it seems to have survived testing!

i installed the full kit (two 90 degree fittings and hose with fittings).

i had to remove the valve cover so I could screw in the 90 fitting on the tstat housing. but I did reinstall it before driving again, which is highly recommended unless you bring lots of additional oil!

I drove for about an hour in typical around-town driving, and then went on the highway and gave it a good 10 launches at 20 psi, including a hot shutdown. Everything was bone dry after the tests!

I didnt test it in 100 degree weather with the AC on and the engine almost overheating..sorry its pretty cold here and just wont happen until July. But, its installed on my car, and I'm leaving it there!

The adapter in the pictures is thinner than the one that is for sale. I'm making it about 100 thou thicker to clamp the oring better.

BTW I can make stuff out of ABS really easily, it machines like butter and I have tons of it. For those who dont know, ABS is used very frequently for interior and exterior automotive trim, so its the right plastic for most things cosmetic on a car.
