I'm on the fence about whether or not to have a shop do a full rebuild on my Garrett T3 or just do a rebuild kit myself from FWD. My car has only 52,000 miles on it. I am assuming the turbo shouldn't need more than freshening up. On the other hand, the car obviously sat for some time and, this being my first turbo, I don't know if a turbo is sensitive to extended periods of inactivity.
There doesn't appear to be any shaft play or any obvious problems with it.
The budget for this project is starting to get a bit tight, but my OCD is always pushing me to over-do things.

So any advice......
Shop rebuild
FWD kit
Or
Just clean it up and slap it back in ????

if it would be me I would use it, since there's no shaft play, if the turbine housing has oil in it then I would rebuild

In the case of oil in the housing then, it would be the full rebuild? I know the kits from FWD are only like $30 or so. I guess that has seals to stop any leaking?

Oops. I guess the memory is the first to go. I thought it was FWD, now I'm wondering where the hell I saw those

Oh boy, nevermind. This thing is actually in worse shape than I remembered, and it's got a crack at the flapper hole in the exhaust housing. That will need replacing.

I think you could stop drill that and have the crack welded up, and then ground flush.
