also, im sure you guys have seen the tiny cracks in the head between the valves, how afraid should i be of those?

Normal, have the head pressure tested and if ok leave them alone.
Cylinder Leakdown Test will also show head leakage.

hell, back in the day we used to swap piston/rod assys out at the track!!!!!!! our motto was broken piston, better then a broken trans!!!!!!

I've cracked 3 pistons (2 on the same weekend drag racing). The last time I didn't have time and drove the car on 3 cylinders basically (cylinder 4 had like 60 psi compression) for a few months. Then I finally saved up and got forged and did it right and haven't broken a piston since. Reusing old pistons and getting it to run is fine as long as you don't expect them to last a long time if you thrash on the car. It's always a trade off, time or money.

I've done the swap by doing a sand paper hone with the old rings before, rings from another engine. Just making sure to go sideways. I also swap rods too, even less timing involved.

The biggest issue is piston weight change really. With the 8v Dodge though near stock they run under 5,000 mostly and it just doesn't matter that much. Weight gets off from filth and carbon more than the little bit in piston weight change.

You need to find why this happened,or it probly will do it again and crack more pistons, you allready know that I guess

patrick- im sure this happened because i found a crack in the air box(T1), a broken knock sensor, and overboosted it HARD, all at the same time!! it was running great before that. it sat in storage too long and this happened bringing it home to get started on restoration. oh well, the head gasket looked terrible anyway.

im ordering new pistons and gaskets, hopefully be done by sunday, i will keep you guys updated.

btw, whats up with filing the new rings? i have never done this before
