Wow, great links. The probes read from the tip, so depending on where you will be drilling, you might want a different lenght probe. The screw in style probes that are listed in your length are compression style, so that should help with any fitment issues. I believe the auto meter probes are 4".

ETA: the auto meter probes are what I am using.

That is right were I have mine at. I would caution that one should keep the angle of the probe in mind, as it could interfere with the block.

Cordes: i think you were the one i discussed this with when i drilled mine... mine still touches the block but not so bad as to hurt anything

I never figured out how to get the clamp around my stock manifold runner, so I just hold the probe in with safety wire. Works fine.

The instructions to my EGT probe warned NOT to install the probe upstream of the turbocharger. I do not know why, but I did it anyway. I did it right at the collector.

I drilled and tapped to install mine, but it somehow came loose last summer, so I squeezed my hands up there again to tighten it up again. I just hope it stays tight and I don't have to keep doing this all the time. No problems otherwise.

The clamps should work fine and should last forever like that. It just looks like a cleaner installation when you drill/tap.

Liability, they dont want to buy you a new turbine wheel when
the probe breaks off and chews up 320,000 RPM turbine blade

I would think upstream of the turbo would be the preferred position, without a doubt. Besides the response time being much slower after the turbo, it would read cooler. How much cooler is something someone else could say, but think how much work that exhaust gas has done by compressing the intake charge, and how much the exhaust gas has expanded by that time. That makes it cooler. If 100 degrees is the difference between happy pistons and melted pistons, I'd make it worthwhile by putting the probe in the right place.
