Is it common on these cars to see an exhaust leak at the manifold where the turbo bolts up? I think I may have a small leak there. Why didn't dodge use a gasket there? Oh well.

yes, a gasket would just burn/wear out. Mine has a terrible leak from there and I think iv finally had enough and am going to fix it next week. Your left with the decision to remove the turbo on its own (what im going for because I don't want to blow $100 on new bolts and HG.) or pull the head. It might take a bit longer but im hoping it works out ok. Im doing the job on an 86 T1 GTS with log intake. I have my FSM at my side and it has step by step procedures for turbo removal with engine in car.

not uncommon, i've even seen the manifold being cracked on the turbo flange.also check the manifold over closely, i've seen them crack and get holes in numerous other places.
i know most wouldn't want to spend the money for a head gasket and bolts but most of the time you'll find the exhaust manifold bolts to be a real pain in the butt so save yourself and take the head off.it makes the job much easier.

Well, going to be doing this tuesday *groan* Im really fighting between pulling the head or not. I think what im going to do is try and pull the turbo and if worst comes to worst and I have to pull the ehad, I will. As far as im concerned $100 is about 12 hours at work so if its anything under that il have not lost money lol.

On the TD Spitfire I had 2 cracks in the manifold, a gap at the flange and a bad leak at the manifold gasket. All of these are currently being addressed. As far as a gasket for the turbo to the manifold there is a stainless steel "crush" gasket that will take care of very minor, <1/64, gaps. I got one from Turbonetics last week. This along with a MAJOR boost leak in the intercooler explains all of the problems I had building and keeping boost.
