Hi guys

Anyone have an idea of how a 2.25" exhaust on a 2.2 carb would be like? What will is sound like? what sort of gain will be had? Would anyone have a sound or video clip of a carb'd 2.2? My brother plans to run the long tube header as well from forward motion.

No cat, muffler and a resonator are planned.

thank you for the help

my 83.5 SC (NA) ran the (Hooker) long tube header, no cat, 2.5" cherry bomb, and 2.5" side exit

sounded sweet but was pretty loud and drony at highway speeds

I think if you went rear exit it would be fine, and if a smidge too loud you can always add a low restriction muffler later, either under car or in rear

My old '85 Glh had a stock manifold, new cat and a 2.25'' exhaust going back to a straight thru stainless muffler. I noticed little difference but the previous exhausts cat was hollowed out and had a straight thru muffler.

My new '84 has the long tube hedder and as of next week will have a 2.25'' exhaust with no cat, a short glasspack and a straight thru muffler. I would deffinately run the exhaust out the back! If you cut the exhaust to short youll lose alot of torque that is greatly needed in these N/A cars. I ran my '84 around for a day with the open hedder, loud as crap! I actually set off a car alarm on a parked car beside the road. The car has a milled head(10.2:1CompressionRatio), MP 767 cam(460lift), and the large tube hedder, the car was actually slower than my old unmodded '85 because of no back pressure!

Thanks for all the replies.. they were filled with good useful information.

the car right now is all stock, and its intended to run an exhaust front to back, with just a resonator and muffler, though, my brother wants to go with borla, but i told him they tend to burn out from what i have read..

So there are decent gains to be had with the 2.25" exhaust which is good not to mention reassuring to read.. he basically wanted to know how it sounded with a larger "street legal lol " exhaust.. and from what i read its going to be good.

Does hooker still offer that long tube header? If so, are they like others of the day prone to cracking at the flange? This wont be a drag car, but a daily so the motor shouldnt be rocking around as much as it would when doing hard launches..

He also wants it to be quiet as possible as it was mentioned the drone can be annoying and actually painful on longer trips.. but wants that nice *snarl* in the upper band, say over 4K.

So thanks again for your help, If there is anything else you can offer, id like to read about it

Use a flex coupling directly behind the hedder, and get the longest one you can find. Ive got an 8'' for mine. Then get MP motor mounts at the very least! Polybushings.com mounts would be better. Ive had several N/A cars and all of them had a pretty decent tone with all different mufflers. Sundance 2.5 Tbi w/ a 2.5'' walker turbo muffler was cheap sounded good and not too loud. Later I replaced it with a side exit 2.5'' w/ a 24'' glasspack muffler and a hollowed cat. Too loud and alot of drone. Daytona 2.5Tbi w/ a 2.25'' exhaust full cat and a flowmaster. Sounded awesome! Fairly quiet around town. GLH n/a with the above mentioned exhaust. Good sound, louder than the Flowmaster but not real loud. I think eventually Ill put a flowmaster on my '84 GLH, Im just broke now and still have the exhaust off of my old GLH.
