Application is 2.2 Turbo.

Are quiet and high flow mutually exclusive terms?

I have a DynoMax on my 2.5 TBI and when it comes time to put a high flow exhaust on my Turbo Z I want it to be much quieter than the DynoMax is on the 2.5. I've been told that the turbo itself helps quiet things down but to what degree. I don't want it to sound like the engine isn't running but at the same time I don't want it to sound loud either.

My goals for this car are not killer as in lots and lots of power etc. My hope is that I can install a muffler of 2.5" in/out that will flow well but will be fairly quiet.

Is this an oximoron or is it possible? I'm willing to compromize somewhat to achieve my modest goals but since it's a T-top and I will be taking it to local shows with the T-tops out I want it to be fairly quiet.

Any suggestions as to which muffler would help reach these goals?

Thanks for the link. That is an interesting design but not what I'm looking for. I will never be taking this car to the track and looking at that image of the muffler I'm not sure how it will fit in the stock location on an '86 Turbo Z. All I really want is to let the exhaust flow well yet have the car quiet. I realize that there are folks out there that are asking themselves "what in the world is this guy thinking?" but since my goals are modest regarding power a very low rumble would be fine if you can talk over it when the T-tops are out.

I used to have a Dynomax Super turbo on my 2.5 TI Spirit and I liked the sound it was quiet at idle and wasn't obnoxiously loud a WOT.
I replaced it with a Dynomax race bullet and I wish I never had.It was too loud and drew unwelcome attention to my car.
If you have moderate power goals a turbo muffler would be fine.

That sounds fine. I'll check but do you know if the Super Turbo from DynoMax comes in a 2.5" in/out and is exactly like the stock unit? I mean is it round and has that bracket for mounting at the output side?

"Are quiet and high flow mutually exclusive terms?"

From my experience, yes. But quiet is different from person to person.

I know that a compromise will be necessary. My hope is that the turbo itself will help to reduce the noise. For example if a stock exhaust system on a standard 2.5 TBI is a 10 for quiet and the same car with the DynoMax catback with turbo muffler (and the rest of the high flow system including cat and mandrel bend 2.25" pipes) is say a 5 then I'm hoping the same setup with the turbo would be more like a 7 or 8. This would be because the turbo limits the noise to the muffler just a bit. The only difference between the two setups would be the turbo and 2.5" pipes rather than 2.25" pipes. If I can get half way between the queit stock and what I have now on my NA Daytona that would be great.

I had the DynoMax 2-1/4" cat back with a turbo muffler on an 88 CSX-T it was near stock noise level. I wished it was louder.

SuperTurbos are strange

i have 2 2.5" short body (13") mufflers on my '79 Malibu & its pretty quiet, & at the track you cannot hear my car at all, the secondaries are much louder then the exhaust is, when they kick in (seriously)

but i have a long body (20") 2.5" SuperTurbo on my moms '00 Grand Caravan 3.3, & its louder then my Malibu

here are some vids, the vids kinda hide the 'true' volume of the exhausts, but you'll get an idea

hope this helps
