I have my brother's old exhaust in my garage just laying there since he put a 3" pipe on his R/T. I have a 93 Daytona TBI, and well, since its free, I was thinking of swaping out my exhaust for his old one, since the R/Ts' exhaust is 2.5" (or 2.25", correct me on this). Would this be TOO big for my 2.5L TBI, because I don't want to lose much bottom end. And what would I need to do to make it fit my manifold? Would I need to extend it higher, or it is fine the way it is?

I believe you will loose some of the bottom end torque with this swap, but it should pick up at the higher revs. You will have to extend the pipe to reach the manifold, but only 2" or so. I ran a 2.25" exhaust on an '83 Rampage. Mileage stayed about the same, low end torque stayed about the same, high revs stayed about the same. It had a throatier sound, though. Oh, jeez, did I mention the engine had like 270k miles and was totally worn out? I guess that might matter, huh?

Remember, too, that the larger exhaust system shoulds also be HEAVIER as well since it's larger diameter pipe. And since it won't add torque it might feel slower. I added a ton of torque on an old Turismo 2.2 by adding a small diameter, long tubing header. Mine was an 83, too. Loved that car. Had 220K on it when I let it go and would take it back in a minute.

ok, any creative ideas on where to get the piping cheap? And madrel bends are pretty expensive though, or should I use the regular crap bends. And what is the pipe size on the TBI cars? Isn't it 1 7/8"? Isn't that basically the same as 2", so would it be just as good to use what I have now with a new cat, and then put in the R/T after that? Sorry, but I'm a total noob to exhaust.

I would go for the r/t system I have seen a header offered too, that might make it more worthwhile. If you go diy, go here :

alright, this is good info, I think I'll stick to my stock piping, and just get high flow cat and muffler, because I wouldn't like to lose any of the bottom end power that I use 99% of the time :|. I have a brand new high flow cat at my disposal, but it is 3"  . Would expanding and then reducing my piping to incorperate the cat slow down the gas and lose torque, or what? I'm asking because hey, its free. And as far as the muffler, I've seen most TD people use the super 40, is that the best choice? But the smallest one I can find is 2.25"  so what should I do?
And could anyone tell me if I'm correct about me having 1 7/8" piping NOW?

You know what, I'm just gonna get the muffler and cat new to "fit" my pipes. Any suggestions on what to get and where to get it? I've seen the Super 40 on ebay for $75 shipped, should I get that? The smallest is 2.25" would that adapt easily? And is mine center/center or what, I ask because I haven't checked and the car's at my brother's garage right now getting the rust holes fixed.
And what about the cat? brand?

don't turbo exhuasts neck down after the muffler? All of them that I have delt with necked down to something smaller than 2" after the muffler.
So you want to go from your exhuast outlet, to a 2.25" muffler, then back to a 2" pipe, then to a who knows what size cat, then make your own over the axle stuff? You're gonna have more money tied up in adapters than if you just went with the R/T exhaust in the first place.
About the whole torque loss thing. In my aunts 275k mile (which for the first 150k miles had the oil changed every 20-25k miles) 2.2 horizon, I could get the tires to smoke in first, second, and third gear. I'm not saying you'll never miss the torque, but it's not going to be like a honda where if you give up 5ft-lbs (if you give up any at all by going to the R/T setup) you're gonna have to dump the clutch to take off on a hill. There is still a muffler, and there will still be some back pressure, just not as much.
Try the R/T stuff, it's free and you'll probably like it. If you don't, you can sell it to someone here to finance a frankenstien kit of your own brewing.
The headers do flow better than the manifolds and do have better scavenging, if the manifolds have scavenging at all. Are they worth the huge prices they are going for? If you are racing in a restricted class, maybe. On the street, when you can get a whole turbo engine for $150?
Well, that's my opinion on the situation anyways.

Yeah, I decided not to do anything else to the Daytona, not until maybe a year or two, when I get another block and start a DOHC project. But for now, I have a 88 Conquest in my garage which is way more worth my money
But I was thinking of putting in a 30" glasspack right after my cat and using that pipe that I'd cut off to replace the muffler, how does that sound? I want the semi-loud low grunt, will I get that? I don't want it too loud, which is why I thought that 30" glasspack would make it lower pitch, correct me if I'm wrong.
And would anyone recommend these glasspacks?:
