How do you remove it? Im have some difficulty with stripped bolts, some bolts on the intake manifold are blocked by the exhaust manifold and some exhaust manifold bolts are blocked by the intake manifold. Is there anyway to get it off?

off the car it is much easier...either way, some universal joints will make it easier as well. soak in pb blaster...and then take a die grinder to any that wont budge or round off....thats what i have done in the past at least.

you should be able to get the intake mani off relatively easily; which makes the exh mani then pretty easy ; most of us that have done this once will pull the head the next time - its way quicker in the long run althou you have to buy a new head gasket and (should buy) new bolts

one of the 10mm U-joint/sockets is VERY helpful for one or two of those tough to get at exh mani bolts

[ not a U-joint then a socket, but the special sockets that have the U-joint integrated into them ]

they are expensive (about 40-50$ for a set of metric 10, 12, 13, 14, 15, 17from Craftsman) but there are some places when they are REALLY useful ; put it on your birthday list - you will love them

like these
Craftsman 34390 12 pc. Socket Set, 6 pt. SAE and Metric Flex at Sears.com

Sears item #00934390000 Mfr. model #34390 if link doesnt work

Got the manifolds off, but not before breaking some studs off. How can I get those out of the aluminum head. They broke off pretty far in the hole. This is not good.

yeah its kind of a pita. When i helped my uncle take his exhaust manifold off his acclaim my dad said that the best way to get it off and have the most room to work with is to just take the head off and change the headgasket..so thats what we wound up doing....It actually went pretty quickly but is there any easier way of doing it?

Anyone who does it on the car that hasn't changed the head gasket will feel like a complete a$$ when the HG eventually blows. The former owner of my van used a Fel-Pro HG and after spending a week and a half messing around with a turbo conversion while keeping the head on, the HG blew!

It's not even an easy task when the head is off the car. You need to remove the turbo, and you might as well remove the starter to give yourself some room to work. Then: fancy socket work and bloody knuckles.
