Hi All,
I have an 89 GTC TII convert. The muffler is bad. I noticed factory ones have 2 tips coming out the back and the after market ones I see have one. I have the stock exhaust system at this time. Does anyone know if theres a good aftermarket muffler that's just like the original? I'm also talking length. The car came with a replacement on it that never fit right. I found a factory one at a bone yard that fit much better and liked the look out the back more. Well that was a $3.00 temperary one that quieted the car down for the last couple months, but is getting louder. Anything out there?
As it is, I'm going to be putting a 2.5 stainless system on in the future. but in no position to do that now.
Thanks

Hi,
I have the same car almost exactly. What I did was get the replacement parts fronm Advance Auto and put them on myself. This left the pipes sticking out to far in the rear so I took it to a muffler shop and had them weld in the muffler further up under the passenger seat and the put a new piece in at the rear to fit the resonator to the rear bumper. It is just a walker glss pack but as I remember the outlet is smaller than the inlet so I had them turn it around. It sounds pretty good but it did cost a little money getting it done.

I bought an exhaust system for my Lebaron from Checker auto parts, only because I had a 25% off coupon. I get there, and the exhaust parts are SPECIAL ORDER ONLY! Well, the coupon doesn't work for special order. There is no fricken reason for this to be special order since they're pretty darn common yet.
I wait a few days, go there and pick it up, and the pipe is super small, crush bent, and just the cheapest, cheesiest piece of ship metal you can find. This is the stuff that lasts 2-3 summers before its rusted through. I tell them that it is too small and is supposed to be bigger to meet OE standards. Nope, cannot return it because it is special order. I am stuck with it. Still have it in the garage, waiting to be installed on a POS I buy for resale that needs some type of exhaust..
The only item of quality was the muffler--the only part that wasn't special order only, and it had the dual tip outlet. Only one of them works since one is a fake, but looks and fits well, and from the sound of it, seems to flow pretty well for a stock engine.
CHECKER SUCKS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Not just because of this one incident either. An auto parts store that sells cheap minibikes and go-karts. hmmmm.

Yeah, I only buy my auto parts at stores that sell good minibikes!
I put an exhaust on my Mom's Sha"Doh!" a couple years ago. The other day, I had to replace her MAP. When we started the car to test it. it was loud. My Mom said put the other one back on. (She's no mechanic) I told her it was the exhaust. I looked under the car and the pipe had rusted the first inch off and was hanging. That's absolutely ridiculus. The last car I put exhaust on of my own was an 83 2.2 Charger my ex and I owned. That was like 15 1/2 years ago. It's so nice the turbo cars have stainless systems.
Paul, why did you have to change the plumbing? Was it just because the muffler was bad? Is one of the tips on my GTC a dummy?

I think my GTC has, for the most part, original exhaust on it. When I bought the car 6 years ago, it had a muffler on it that wasn't quite installed right. It hung down much farther than it should have. It looked dumb that way, but it had a functional Y-pipe for the dual outlet. Comparatively, this one was VERY restrictive. I'd go full throttle under an overpass and the hiss noise was ear piercing. The muffler itself rusted out and the pipe part of it broke off in St. Paul. Note that this car has been winter stored for the four years prior to this thing rusting through. One of those summers saw MAYBE 4 instances of rain... seriously.
Knowing that the rest of the exhaust has some age to it, I figured I'd replace the whole thing since its actually easier that way. After I got the replacement pipe, I determined from experience that this old pipe would outlast the new stuff. So, I just slapped the muffler on, and away I went and it purrs like a kitten.
I had the same problem with my Daytona. The previous owner put an exhaust system on it shortly before I bought it. It rusted through. I installed a complete system on it (I was ~17 years old at the time) and that exhaust system saw MAYBE one winter and the car was not driven much up until the turbo engine went in about 2-3 years ago when I had to go with a substancially larger exhaust system. I still have that exhaust pipe up in my garage rafters, and its not in very good shape at all.
The aluminized pipe from FWDPerformance is twice the quality, bigger in size, and very comparatively priced. Oh, and twice the size LOL.
That 2nd outlet on your muffler may or may not be a fake. It may as well be a fake regardless because it is just a Y-pipe. You can tell if exhaust flows through it by checking for exhaust soot in them.
