Leaking Exhaust

I just installed my rebuilt motor into the car, 86' 2.2 turbo. And well it seems to be leaking exhaust from the turbo to exhaust manifold flange. It a "new" used turbo I installed with very low km's onto the old manifold. Is there any way I can fix this? Personally I was surprised there was no gasket for it. I have to get it ready for Moparfest in New Hamburg Ontario. Thanks.

hi Peter,were practically neighbours Im in milton anyway I had the same problem with my shelby z after I ceramic coated the exhaust manifold aside from removing the manifold and turbo and having them machined you can simply pull the turbo and clean the mating surfaces and then apply a coating of wheel bearing grease once the parts are hot the grease turns to carbon and seals your leaks worked great for me thanks to Dean Stille's advice

Cool. thanks im going to try that out. Just a bit of a stuggle to get at the turbo flange while its in the car.

my exh mani side of the flange was warped bad, possibly due to overtightening the exh mani to turbo nuts; it was leaking like a sieve

took 30 minutes on a big belt/disc sander to get that sucker flat; then a bit of axle grease for reassembly (as erik mentions) = no leaks

if you have that problem, then no amount of grease will seal that puppy; maybe take some feeler gauges and see if they slide into the crack, find out how big it is

sorry but you may have to pull the exh mani to get it right ; oh well - good time to replace with ported and coated unit
