Which would flow more freely; a full 3" exhaust including free-flowing cat and muffler running all the way to the back of my Caravan, or an exhaust cutout installed shortly behind the turbo? I'm assuming the exhaust cutout would flow more. If so, what would the possible downside be?

Cut out.

Quiet when you want it, loud when you want it.

Downside, there is a button you have to push...

How much louder do you suppose it would be than a full 3" exhaust? I've heard the turbo takes care of a good portion of the noise.

It would be a lot louder because it would be right where you are sitting instead of behind the car. One other downside you should check into is whether it is legal in Oregon or not. In Pennsylvania, you cannot get a car inspected with an exhaust cutout on it.

That seems screwy. If you theoretically only use it at the dragstrip, I wouldn't think you wouldn't be violating the law. Sounds like it's one of those laws to punish everyone to stop a few. At any rate, I'm in an area without vehicle inspections or DEQ, so it's not an issue for me...yet.

Maybe I can run a side pipe from the cutout to keep noise in the cabin down a little more if I decide I need it. Thanks, guys!

Just move to where they don't have inspections: here! Also does the carbon buildup ever effect an electric cutout? Like will it get stuck partially open/closed or full open/closed? No a turbo does not remove a whole ton of noise. I ran mine open SV until we got the exhaust on and the turbo sounded mean but that ****er was loud!

LOL I work in oregon... and trust me! That would be MUCH too loud. A cat at minimum to muffle even just a bit would help (cats actually muffle quite a bit, really). Running an open cutout constantly throughout is a sure fire way to get unwanted attention from the cops.

Look, I have two turbo dodge.

89 Daytona Shelby with 3 inch downpipe and cut out in front of the cat. The rest of the exhaust system is stock.

85 GLH with 3 inch downpipe, 3 inch cat, 2x 3 inch mufflers, and 3 inch everything else.

I much prefer my 89 Daytona Shelby's exhaust system over the GLH. Loud when I want, quiet when I want.

I have the same setup on my GLH-T. (Except the cat. I don't have one.)
Before that I had a 3 inch downpipe & dynomax flow through that basically dumped where the shifter is. total length: 3 feet.
Just driving it, I feel no difference.
But I have to say I'm digging the total quietness of the full exaust. My fuel pump is louder then the rest of the car...

...and the way the "bacon" fries around here, that's a good thing.

I loved my 3" cut out, it wasn't too loud at all. I was also running a 3" side exit with cat and chambered muffler. Both sounded great, but the cutout you could hear the turbine whistle, which would always give me goose bumps. I recommend both, especially on a minivan. I was doing 55 in a 45 letting my BOV go off with the cut out open in east Portland and I drove right by a cop, he never even looked up.

I agree with tkelly. I have 2.5" mandrel bent exhaust with a magnaflow cat and muffler and a 3" electronic dump valve right at the bottom of the downpipe. The cutout was my favorite mod I did to the car in the last rebuild I think. The sound alone was worth it, but even with the 2.5" exhaust, its a NOTICEABLE difference powerwise with it open. Some dyons have said roughly 23-28 whp without having to go through a cat. So, its well worth it in my opinion. Plus, with the whole minivan sleeper thing, its priceless. Start a race with it closed, get to the top of a gear and open that thing up and watch the other persons eyes! LMFAO
