For kicks, I cut off the muffler at the joint in front of the rear wheel. What totally surprised me was the sound. Above 3500 and in any boost, it makes a really loud constant "ssshhhhhhhh" sound, like a super loud fan or something. I figured the turbo would damp most of the noise, but this is extremely loud and odd sounding. Sounds like a normal non-muffled exhaust at low revs, no boost. Has anyone else run into this?

Shortly I'll do the exhaust right anyway, but now I'm wondering if even a correct open exhaust is going to sound like this, which is awful. Maybe the slightly coned-down shape of the now cut outlet is making some kinda venturi sound amplifying woosh?

Just odd, thought I'd check responses...

With no muffler, I'd expect to be able to hear the turbo spooling somewhat. And it might sound odd with the rest of the exhaust still being stock. Do you still have the cat on there?

with no muffler but still a cat on my GLHT when it was stock it sounded like a big cigarette boat at idle and a nice burble at cruise with a muted roar at WOT. Wasn't too loud at all. Of course when it exits all the way out the back the sound changes than if it exits elsewhere.
