2.5 inch swing valve, 2.5 inch down pipe, cat removed, some high flow straight throw muffler...cant remember who makes it. Anyway, driving is loud especially at 3 grand, plus when I let off the gas (car is currently an auto) my exhaust pops and it is annoying. My buddy said to throw a 12-24 inch resonator up there like a thrush or cherry bomb glass pack. Has anyone done this? Did the popping stop?

Yeah i love the popping sound. My car had a completely stock exhaust but the muffler was completely rusted off so it popped and was decently loud. I got pulled over for loud exhaust and put a new regular muffler on it. I hate it because you cant hear anything and the popping went away.

+1

I have almost the same system you do and it pops on decel ;a second muffler/resonator would probably eliminate that along with 1-3 Hp

there are inserts you can insert in the tailpipe tip, as well as baffled tips

Yeah, don't put a resonator on, you will be adding back pressure. When you put on a higher flowing exhaust the popping just got louder. It was always there. Mine does it really loud with a full three inch and a cat.

I don't let it bother me.

I am looking for gray interior trim for a J-body (1987-1989) LeBaron coupe hardtop. If you have anything please PM me before throwing it out. I am also selling tan trim if you're interested.

Alright, I know that free flowing exhaust pops, I also know that by "stopping" it I will be decreasing power. But I want a quiet car, I don't wanna have to explain the turbo set up every time I go on a date. Besides, I am looking for an electronic cut out to put at the bottom of the down pipe so when I need power Ill hit the switch. So since a resonator wont do the job, should I just go with say a dynomax turbo muffler or something like that. My goal here is to make a aggressive sounding car (think James Bond cars) but with out killing all power potential. What about putting a regular muffler on like they dynomax, or even a flowmaster, but make it 4 inch inlet and 4 inch outlet. With the added 1.5 inches that shouldn't restrict it to much but still keep the popping almost nonexistent. Am I crazy or could that work?

prolly not ; its kind of a catch-22: almost impossible to reduce noise without adding BP ;

a very large 4" I/O muff would give almost no BP but would do very little for reducing noise

put the stock exhaust back on it. then do the electric cut out. problem solved. saved yourself a nice headache and money.

Get the longest and widest straight through muffler you can find... Magnaflow has some good ones... the wider it is the more sound waves bounce off its sides and cancel out. Won't totally get rid of fuel pops though but will improve cruising sound.

It's easy to stop the popping. Just have the fuel turn completely off above your idle vacuum.

if you have a custom cal, you can adjust the decel fueling, and minimize/cut it

yep, say you idle at 20" of vac, so in the cal you shut off the fuel at 22-23" of vac. No fuel=No popping.
