if you have 2.25-2.5 flanges on either sides of the 2.5 pipe then it will work, but if not there's too big of a size difference

How about if you just "hollow out" the cat. I have seen people take pipes to smash the stuff out.

Inlet on the cat is 2.5". Outlet is 2.25".

I used a 2.5" pipe (18") from Autozone with a swaged end on one side. This end I clamped to the downpipe. On the other side, I believe I used a 2.5" -> 2.25" adapter, clamping the adapter on the outside of the stock exhaust pipe.

This was some years ago, so I'm a little iffy in the adapter size. Worked great, though.

If you gonna do that just remove the whole system past the DP.

yes the DP will hang too low once it's cut off before the cat and nothing is hooke dup to it. I used and still am using some 16guage wire (solid not coiled) and have strung it up from the heat shield "bolts" the DP is light enough that it won't be a problem.

Nope. Inlet was always 2.5". My Lancer which I did this to was an '88.

Grab a 2.5" pipe like I said.
