Jan 1st 2004 PA is to have a new law that means my car needs a CAT. Is there a way to just make it look like I have one on the car? They are just going to be looking to see if one is on the car. I do not want one unless I have to.

You can simply take a cat and knock all of the stuff out of it so it's hollow.

If you put less than 5000 miles per year on your car in pa, you shouldnt have any problems.

remember a cat does effect the emisions readings at the tailpipe.......if they are only gonna do a visual a fake cat is good, but if they are gonna test your emisions at the tailpipe then in all likelyhood your cat will be needed to meet the numbers.

of course there is a chane you could pass with a fake hollowed out cat......thats your gamble.

Visual is all they are going to do on my 89 Daytona. On newer cars they will just be hooking up to the vehicles computer to see emissions are ok. No probe up the tailpipe. I put about 100 miles a day on my car. Do you think I could weld a cat outside over my pipe and it would look good to an inspection mechanic?

Ed Renhell, the jerk, has passed a law for state wide emissions. Any good inspection shop should be able to give you all the details about it. I had to find out about it by seeing it on WGAL 8 news.

Yes, but on our old cars they will just be looking for the CAT and other items for emissions that are stock. No probe up the tailpipe.

Since I am dead set against having any emissions junk on my cars, none of them will ever have a cat, law or no law.

I first heard of this BS cat law a month ago. I asked several different mechanics about it.

Apparently, even if your car is emissions exempt, you must now have a cat to get past the safety inspection. No cat, no sticker, period. This also applies in the 42 counties that didn't have emissions inspections already.

Well, I will tell them my car is driven less than 5000 miles a year (a big fat LIE) and get out of the emissions inspection, but depending on which mechanic I go to, they may or may not let me slide on the cat thing.

I'm going to upgrade to a full 3" exhaust on my 89 Spirit 2.5 Turbo car, and I was thinking of just clamping or welding a fake converter shell over the outside of my pipe.

Or making a removable section so I can clamp in the cat, get the sticker, and go home and clamp the straight pipe back in.

I used to know a guy who would just put a sticker on and not even look at the car, but he got busted.

I know someone who knows someone (no, I don't know who it is) who can get me a sticker, but it costs $60.

No easy way out, I guess.

And no, I did NOT vote for Rendell.

easy way to avoid hastle. When I got in trouble for my 2.5" open exhaust, they gave me a week to get it straight. So I swapped a factory system in, got it checked and swapped it back out. Took me all of 20 minutes. Unbolt 2 clamps and take it off the hangers. Could even get a factory setup from the JY here for about $10. That way yer not really tryin to sneak anything past them so there's nothing for them to find. Once you take care of rusty clamps and get the pipes separated, exhaust is really easy to work with :big grin:

I have a 3" FM cat on my Lancer, it doesn't hinder flow, she'll run 100mph up bryndale hill (Steep) near Saint Marys in Elk co. And that is a heavy car with log intake. The cat really does help emmissions. my car w/o cat puts out about 500 hydrocarbons and with cat it's only 9 HC's. My opinion is run a big 3" exhaust with cat and you'll make power to keep you happy and you'll keep the air clean too. Clean air makes the deer grow bigger lol. We got smog in California and the deer aren't bigger than dogs.

I used to feel the same way you guys do until I got the 3" system. And oh does it sound good!! It has the deep blub blub sound. Not the farting blumble bee sound of the ricers. It sounds like American muscle."thumbs up

"it's not the tip that matters it's the size of the pipe baby"
