I remember reading in several different places about guys with turbo's and no cats still passing emmisions due to the heat produced by the turbo burning off some of these gasses

Depends on the emissions test, It would pass our steady 40 km/h but not our IM240 test. Definately wouldn't pass Californias tests!

cats can also contribute to interior fires.. the location they are on our cars.. i bought a 3" catco and installed it in my system until i felt my floorboard burning up through my shoes.. yes teh heatshields are there. no the car wasnt running too rich.
my reason for not having a cat is because i dont like hot floorboard.
*the fire part was mentioned because there are electrical wires underneath cars carpeting.. if the floorboard gets too hot the wires will melt. and contact the floor.*
thats one thing i feared with my car.

I love the smell of the exhaust after I put some 107 octane in there. Makes me feel like I'm right at the racetrack. As far as breating in 30 years, that's the least of my worries. With Bush wanting billions and billions for a space station lab on the moon and some more worthless trips to Mars, we'll be lucky if we have enough cash to live on come 2030. (Especially when the baby boomers collect their SS money and leave none for those of us who are going to somewhat rely on it as income when we retire.) Kill The Cats!
Oh, after taking off the CAT, my HP increased a few points on the ol'dyno.....Cats rob power, even if they are the high-flow models.

If your burning out cats, you have a problem!!!!!
As for adding a few ponies, that was never disputed. I am going to build a race system with just a muffler for that reason so I can maximize every lasty HP when drag racing. :big grin:

Running rich or lean doesn't kill them, misfires do. You can destroy a cat with a one cylinder misfiring in a matter of hours. But the OEM cats can seem to take that abuse for weeks, months but aftermarket cats days/hours!!!
I just like them because they actually work, again my opinion and I will have 1000's saying the opposite

for the majority of the nation CATS suck, for those areas that have checks, and do have smog problems, shut your hole and run the CAT, or pay the fine. As for the smell, tune your stinking car moron, a properlly tuned car will not smell with or with out the cat, save for the warm up cycle. I am all for helping the enviroment in everyway possible, btu I ould argue to say that the main thing emmisions check have done is simply make people keep there car in proper tune. A poorly tuned car with a CAT will belch more crap then a well tuned CATless car. So once again, tune your car, untill then quit whining.

Pay the fine? Sheeit bro, that's why you have a shop fab up a part that allows the cat to pop right back into place for emissions check. Also, ever smell 109 octane without a cat coming from the exhaust pipe? It NEVER burns complete and you always get the smell....doesn't matter if your car is 'tuned' properly - you could have one of the best tunes in the world but it's still gonna stink like race fuel. I'm not whining - I'm doing what I please and passing emissions at the same time by just hooking up my cat at test time. Enuff said.
