I'm buying an AutoMeter EGT gauge from the lowest bidder I can find as soon as my tax refund gets here.

But I was looking at my engine today (89 Spirit, Turbo 2.5), and I noticed something. From the sides, you can't even SEE the exhaust manifold!

I haven't gotten under the car yet, but I can't imagine how I'm gonna get the sensor into the #4 manifold.

I've been told the place to install it is 1 inch from the head in #4 (closest cylinder to the transmission). Correct?

Tell me I won't have to pull the head / manifolds / turbo to put the EGT gauge in.

If I have to do that, I'll just make do with a voltmeter or Dawes Device wired into the O2 sensor.

That's not quite the problem. My problem is that from the drivers side of the car, you can't see the exhaust manifold AT ALL, much less drill a hole in it and get a clamp around it somehow.

It has the blow through one piece intake on it.

I DO put the probe in #4 cylinder (closest to the transmission), right? I could get it into #1 fairly easily.

i had the blow through as well. u can barely see enough of the manifold to drill it. u see a patch like 1.5" x 1.5" and thats the exact spot u need to drill.
and ur using the clamp style probe? i was using the tap-style, so that was easier for me.

I just bought a ported exhaust manifold from Forward Motion Inc. and Mike Demoss over there said to put it on cylinder #1 or #2 , about an inch and one quarter from the head. Actually, here is the conversation....

> Mike, is it possible to drill and tap a hole in the exhaust manifold for an EGT gauge? And if it is, where would you suggest putting it?
>

Yes, you can tap the exhaust manifold. We recommend mounting the sensor in the top of the manifold about 1 1/4 inches from the cylinder head. Use cyl. number 1 or 2 since they are the easiest to get to. The sensor that we use has 1/8 inch npt threads and you'll use a 21/64 drill bit to make the hole.

Hope that helps

Easily done IN the car. Mount it in #4, our hottest (typically) combustion chamber.

thats gonna be extremely hard to do (if no impossible) to do with the engine already installed. if the manifold is out, any machine shop will be able to hook u up.
