I went to truck store, bought 3" flex pipe ($5/foot) and 2 big exhaust clamps and utilized a muffler and stainless straight pipe that i had around the garage, spent $55 for a system that goes to the gas tank. I bought 4' of flex and used that for a downpipe. Then i hung my 3" straight through muffler ($20) with some stainless in front of it to get it back to the gas tank. No mandrel bends when flex let the exhaust go anywhere. I am using mandrel for my intercooler piping and that's not cheap!

Good luck,

I think Bigger pipe is quieter than smaller pipe. I had the cat cut out and a section of 2.25" pipe to get it out the side on the car before. It was much louder, and would crackle and spit when revving it up or decelerating. Going to the 3" made it just a deep burble. On my GLH I had the muff and cat cutout and it exiting out the back. Sounded like someone shooting a hunting rifle off everytime it would spit on decel. VERY LOUD But not too much in the car. But you could hear it 3 blocks away easily. Like DWH said it's not bad in the car with the big 3" side exit straight pipe. Even outside the car. I've never been pulled over for it.

here are some pics at Cliff's page of my 86 Daytona.

Cost 200$ FWD 3" SS Spirit Exhaust, 135$ SS Ultraflow muffler, 75$ CatCo 3" Cat, 400$ TU 3"SV, 3" Down Pipe, 200$ installation. Look at 3rd page

For comparison, the Garret on my 86 spools faster than the mitsu on my 89 2.5 with a 2.5" exhaust.

You don't need much pipe to put together a nice exhaust. I custom made mine. I bought 2- 90 degrees 3" mandrel bends and 1 or 2 45 degree 3" mandrel bends from jc whitney. I know they're pricier, but it you want 3" you gotta spend some money. I think all that cost about 80-100. Then I bought like 2 feet of straight pipe 3" for like $10-20. I went with a cat from ebay brand new high flow 3" for $60, and a dynomax ultraflow for $60. Then just welded it up. You could find stuff cheaper and I think the dynomax bullet 3" mufflers are like $30 or so and no cat you could probably pick up all the hardware for like $150-170, or cheaper. I think alot of people in the world don't know what they're doing which is why the muffler shops are giving you a hassle. Many guys on this site know our cars really well and 3" will fit between the gas tank and spring it's a little tight, but there's enough room (I'm talking daytona from experience). It's hard finding competent people who will do exactly what you need done. Good luck.

I have welded my own exhausts from mandrel bent pipe, but it really isn't worth it when you can buy the kit from FWD Perf. It will be much cleaner and also flow better. I know I have been there and done that. It won't cost that much more to get the pipe pre-bent from FWD Perf vs. having the local shop do it. I can guarantee the local shop can't match the fit and finish of the FWD Perf system. They made a believer out of me.

I am with chris on the side exit. If you have to live with your car everyday you will want it out the back. Under the car droans and out the side will make you deaf in your left ear. My .02

I drive my 3" side exit every day. Not deaf in my left ear. even with the T-tops off. Maybe it's just my car. But at cruise it's fine. On decel it's not much worse. And at WOT and full boost you're outrunning the sound well you should be anyway. The only time it's loud is when I'm 6" from a K-rail at WOT. But then it's just fun.
