its not just CA, several states have mandatory emission inspections. and many large cities/counties all across the country do as well. in my area, we may be forced by the EPA to begin an inspection program in 3 years, if air quality standards arent met by other means by then....

What would you rather have, slight decrease in performance and being able to breath or all out power and oxygen mask when your older?

I got the problem fixed. I live in New Jersey and emissions criteria is part of the yearly inspection we are required to do. I barely passed the NOx portion of the emissions inspection. I do need a new cat though, I cant remember if it affects the NOx gases or not. I thought they were controlled thru reburn (recirculation system and the cooler burn tempatures that result). I do know that it took a beating when my turbo started leaking oil down its throat, not good. Then it took another when I spun that bearing....Oh yea and the head gasket that was blow when I first got the car....Thats all taken care of now though. Anyone wanna buy an 89 daytona shelby?? I dont think Id like the car as much if I didnt practically build the darn thing. Now Ive got a vacuum leak again. Or maybe a bad map sensor if my luck holds. I once had a Hall effect pickup go bad on the daytona. At least I thought that was It was. So I went to the boneyard and picked one up. Easy enough. Put it in. SS. Broke out the multimeter traced out the circuit. Has the be the Hall effect pickup. Went back to the boneyard got another. SS. Well to make a long story short, the pickup in my car was bad, and the two that I got from the boneyard.

Cats are basically afterburners!!!!!!! picture honycomb cereal, thats what the insides look like, the exhaust gases pass thru that honeycomb and a chemical reaction takes place, NOx is reduced and the others gases are changed from Hc's, CO to CO2 and H20. Coolant, oil etc coats the substrate and renders it useless. Cats don't wear out, they get contaminated and stop working, thats how Catalysts works, they help or create chemical reactions but don't get used up.

Sorry If I rant about cats but I am a emissions repair shop and have seen our NOx haze dissapear over the last 10 yrs, yes they do produce CO2 but hey, at least we can breath better, lol!

LOL, hey I dont mind the ranting. I know they dont get "used up". I think mine is probably just coated with a lot of junk.

you were right the cat is plugged, real plugged.
