The Shifter cables can be removed, and you can drill new holes and just have them go through the firewall higher up. My spirit conversion has the cables much higher then stock.

I did, after I shot these pics. Unfortunately, the angle and shortening the length from the flange, didn't make enough of a difference.
It was a worthwhile effort, and only cost me about $50 for all of it.
Lesson learned for me. Thank god I'm going with the twins.
