I was hoping that some list members could offer some insight into partial turbo disassembly.

I've done some poking around the forum re: turbo disaasmbly and found the post on turbo rebuilding from the turbo regal forum.

I am primarily concerned with seperating the turbine housing. While removing the swing valve two bolts snapped off in the turbine housing.

Will the turbine housing seperate from the center section with ease once the bolts are out? or will it require persuasion?

How difficult is seperating the turbine housing from turbo? Any tips?

Do the mounting bolts for the swing valve "go all the way hrough", or could the bolts be drilled out with the turbo still assembled?

The turbo only has about 30k on it, and i would like to avoid damaging it or having to have it rebuilt. Having a TD for may years, I am well versed in extracting broken bolts, and the other finer points of TD ownership. While I have installed turbos, I have never had reason to disassemble one and while eager to learn am somewhat apprehensive. Any insight would be appreciated.

Your SV bolts only go into the turbine housing, not the comp housing. You won't need to take the compressor housing off. The turbine housing is not difficult to remove but pay attention to how it is "clocked" and match mark it to the center housing so you can put it back in the same position.

My apologies. I mistakenly used "compressor housing" when I meant "turbine housing". Based upon what I have seen, I will remove the turbine housing. It doesn't sound that difficult. Thanks for all your input. Much appreciated.

John B is quite correct

I will add:the hard part with removing the turbine housing will again be the bolts themselves ; couple are in a difficult spot and will not allow a socket or even the 'box' end of a box/open wrench so you are stuck using the 'open' end

mine are rusty and it seems they are 1/2" but one or 2 I was able to get a 12mm on it (cuz the rust had made them smaller)

still they were rusted tight and as soon as I leaned on them the 'box' end opened up a little and the wrench slipped rounding off my bolt shoulders

so you may need a 'high quality' box end 1/2" ; I quit before stripping further ; next attempt will be in a vice with the mofo heated up cherry red using an oxy-acetylene torch

once the bolts are out, the turb. housing pops right off (be careful as you remove that you dont nick any of the turbine wheel fins)
