I bought a used turbo (garrett T3/chrysler T2) over the internet. The seller said there was very minimal shaft play, and was one of the tightest used turbo's he had ever seen. Well, I got it, and it is almost as loose as the blown turbo I am replacing. If you wiggle the shaft, there is a noticable amount of side play, although in and out there is very little/none detectable. If you move it to the side as far as it will go, and turn it, you can *just* here the vanes scraping the dirt/corrosion on the housing. It spins freely. I have no doubt that the turbo is probably still good, but this seems pretty sloppy to me. Unfortunately I don't really have anything good to compare it to. Cost was $240 USD/shipped with 2.5" swing valve. Is this par for a used turbo?

Sounds like it's "on par" with a "used" turbo......BUT not "on par" with the sellers discription. If you can move it side to side, and the seller stated that it's the "tightest" used turbo he's ever seen, then either he's not seen many used turbos, or all the one's that he's seen were crap. For what you paid for it, you could've added a bit more and got your old one rebuilt.

I would try and get your money back. I am going to have a garret forsale in a few weeks. Its pretty tight. I am replacing it with a hybrid. You can either bolt it on or send it off to get rebuilt.... what ever is in your budget. Just pm me to let me know if your interested....

PS
I would sell it for way cheaper then what you paid.

From what i have heard, a used turbo is worth at the most whatever the core charge is on a rebuilt one. I can get them for $40 from the junkyard near my house.

Yes, junkyard prices certaily vary, the ones that i go to want $40, im sure there are others that want quite a bit more though. Next time they have a half price sale im probably going to go back and pick up a somewhat worn turbo II turbo for $20. lol

a dry turbo is going to have more shaft play than a turbo with oil in it, the oil affects the amount of play you will feel

# What is/causes Shaft Play?
Shaft play is caused by the bearings in the center section of the turbo wearing out over time. When a bearing is worn, shaft play, a side to side wiggling motion of the shaft occurs. This in turn causes the shaft to scrape against the inside of the turbo and often produces a high-pitched whine or whizzing noise. This is a potentially serious condition that can lead to internal damage or complete failure of the turbine wheel or the turbo itself.
copied this from garretts web site, its self explanitory, the interesting thing
is there are no SPECS for shaft play, either radially or axially...hmmm
I know there are a hundred opinions on this, but I have found most non bbc
sections have .0015 shaft to bearing oil clearance...so total radial play
read with a dial indicator would be .003, yeah I know , with wear that will increase, but to a point of blade to housing contact?....thats a very vague
spec.
personaly , as it is a pressure fed asy, like cam/rod/crank I do not go past
.005 -.008 total, as the little beast is spining at 100k+, but thats just my .02$

WOW!! $240 for a used Turbo!! I would say that's a huge chunk.
If you bought it on ebay, I would try and use whatever you can to file a claim to say the item is not as advertised. If it was a private sale, it all depends on the morals of the party who sold you the part. Never hurts to ask though!

I was lucky, a member on this board was parting out a T2 Daytona and he sold me the bulk of the conversion parts I needed for what you paid for just the turbo. (I forgot this members' handle but if you're reading this, once again THANK YOU! ) Not to mention it turned out to be a very good turbo! Better than the one currently on my car

Don't just run out and file a claim against the seller on ebay, try and work with him first.

Actually there are spec's.
0.008" in and out
0.022" side to side

Bottomline is if the wheel is rubbing the housing those bearings are done.
