i have an 86 Lebaron with the 2.2 T1 setup. the car has 165k miles on it & i think the turbo is giving out. i'm on a very small budget, so a rebuild kit or new turbo are pretty much out at this time. what other "stock" turbos will work with the T1 set up? i was thinking of pulling one from a lower mileage car in a junkyard.

well, when i got the car the turbo was pretty loud & i could hear it under any driving conditions. now, i can't even tell if it's working at all most of the time. if i do hear it, it's really faint. plus, my car has absolutely no low rpm go anymore.

any turbo dodge car should have a boost guage in it from the factory.

after you get a boost gauge you can see whats giong on much better. Most of the time when turbos go out you will get lots of smoke or you will be pretty much "go-less." It will still run, but it will suck. I'd look more towards a computer issue, an intake pipe getting closed off, timing, etc.

Your original post says you are working on a small budget. For the sake of trouble shooting, nab a boost gauge from a Daytona or other TD from the junkyard. You can run a vacuum line into the interior and just set it on the seat or wherever. You could even temporarily tie wrap it on your cowl so you can see how your turbo is working. Should be able to get it for like $5. I've even used a combination vacuum/fuel pressure tester(carbed cars) in a pinch.

no plugged cat, it was removed about 6 days ago. if the turbo is acting up, would the car "surge" under acceleration?

well timing has been mentioned by others, but i checked my timing belt & it looks to be quite ok. i've also been told hall effect. i've been told many different things, but unfortunately, i can't purchase all those things at once to see who is right.

well, i was checking today when i got to work & after driving for approx an hour...i parked my car & was letting it idle before i shut it off & i started seeing smoke that's not there when the car is being driven. so, with what was said about smoke, does this mean the turbo is going out for sure?

blue smoke? probably. Could also be coming from your cylinders or valve seals, but considering that is has no more go at low rpm, and you're not beating on it hard enough to crack a piston or something (I assume) my money is on the turbo. Aren't rebuild kits for these fairly cheap? Possibly about the same price as a junkyard turbo, and you know it will work (I've had horrible luck w/ j-yard stuff not working ) Good luck
