At last something in the TD world I've done faster/more times than other people! I can remove the turbo in about an hour without removing the head. I've had a lot of practice since every time I put the turbo in something on it would break or I'd need to take it off to retighten something : (. This was in a van, but but it should be about the same in any car. If you remove the passenger side axle it will be much much easier. Pull the downpipe out of the way if you are facing the turbo, the two right nuts are removed with a wrench, easy to do with the box end, the lower left should be done with the open end, its good if you have a little curve to it. Top left one is a piece of cake with a sockett and an extension. Disconnect the oil and coolant lines where they connect at the block and the head because you will never be able to reconnect them under the intake, do whatever you want with the bottom oil return and coolant return, remove your turbo. Putting the new one back in, snake the oil and coolant lines back to where they go as you put the turbo in, then rebolt it on, once again the lower left nut will be a huge pita, but its not impossible. Again, if you are replacing with a bigger turbo you are definately going to want to take the axle out, it'll make you a happier person in the end. Little more work, but if your HG is good then theres no sense in replacing it : D I would not remove the exhuast manifold to get at the turbo. Its not the removal that scared me, I just barely got it back together while it was on my work bench, god forbid under the car with the heavy turbo hanging off of it.

Thanks for the helpers guys. I know I can do it now. Can't wait to have my super 60 in there with 3"swingvalve and 3" downpipe. 13's here I come.

(t2 to super 60)... i would reccomend pulling head... but if you are cheap as i was it is possible... i actually pulled it up through below the throttle body (and i have an egt gauage in cyl 4... and no you dont have to take the exhaust manifold

A few of you guys said you pulled the turbo out by the airbox. I wonder if my two piece intake manifold will cause any issues in getting the turbo out that way.

Alright, I'd like to try and do the swap (from a Mitsu turbo to a Garrett TII turbo) without removing the head, but I would have to change the oil lines anyway. Would I be better off pulling the head? What about getting the wastegate off with the Mitsu and putting the whole Garrett setup w/ new wastegate in?

you don't need to take the WG off... you just unbolt the turbo and the oil/coolant lines and yank it out. How many miles since your last HG change? You may want to change it anyways, kinda wish I would have, although I wish the last owner would not have used a fell pro gaskett.

I have done it a few times on my Daytona. Here's a few tips that might make it easier:
Remove the airbox and hoses.
Make sure the car is high enough that you can at least sit up straight while underneath.
After pulling the downpipe and heat shield, disconnect the oil and coolant lines to drain the fluids.
Remove the wastegate and swingvalve. This gives easy access to 3 of the 4 nuts for the turbo.
The 4th nut can be removed from above, by reaching under the throttle body.
Pull the turbo from the downpipe opening, or under the throttle body.
Note: It's a lot easier if you have flexible oil and coolant lines, instead of the factory piping. Use Never-Sieze on all nuts and bolts!

I was able to pull the turbo and reinstall by pulling it out between the intake and trans. I have the 2 piece intake on an 86 GLHS. You will have to do some stuff from underneath(obvious), but it will come out from the top.

I swapped out my garrett in my shadow with a one piece intake in 4 hours. Without removing the head. and swaping out the turbo housings and bolts and fittings, and assembling the new turbo then reinstalling.i pull the turbo out from where the throttle body is. And small hands definaltely help!!!

If you don't want to pull the head, just yank the entire engine. Then you will have plenty of room to remove the turbo.
May sound like a lot more work, but it really isn't.
Another tip is to remove the front engine mount and transmission mount, and swing the entire engine/transmission towards the front of the car some. You can get 3 more inches of working room back there by doing that.
